At no time ever will any member of the Sheriff’s Office, or any other law enforcement agency, including the court system, call you by telephone to collect money for a missed court appearance or jury duty, nor will they call you to collect money for a bond. We have received recent complaints that citizens are being contacted by phone in reference to missing jury duty, and being asked to pay a fine over the phone. Do not respond to these types of calls. If we want you, we will come and get you, or you will be served court papers by us.

JAY COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE

Recognition of Lifesaving Actions

On December 8, 2025, Deputy Brennin Wasson of the Jay County Sheriff's Office demonstrated exceptional courage, professionalism, and dedication to public service while responding to a serious injury crash within the Portland city limits. Although the incident fell under the jurisdiction of the Portland Police Department, Deputy Wasson willingly answered the call to assist.

Upon arrival, Deputy Wasson encountered a severe crash involving a white Kia Soul. The male driver had been traveling southbound on Industrial Drive when he lost control of the vehicle.

The driver's side struck a guardrail, which penetrated the driver's side bumper and fender before piercing into the passenger compartment of the vehicle. The impact caused catastrophic injuries to the driver's left leg, including a large laceration and dislocation of the lower leg.

Recognizing the severity of the injuries and the immediate threat to life, Deputy Wasson quickly took decisive action by applying a tourniquet to the driver's leg, providing critical lifesaving measures at the scene. Deputy Wasson's rapid assessment undoubtedly played a major role in preserving the driver's life until medical personnel could assume care. The driver was later airlifted to Lutheran Hospital for treatment of the injuries sustained in the crash and ultimately survived.

Sheriff Ray Newton proudly recognizes Deputy Brennin Wasson for his lifesaving efforts, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to serving the citizens of Jay County and the City of Portland.

Deputy Wasson's actions on December 8, 2025 exemplify the honor, integrity, courage, and selfless dedication expected of the men and women of the Jay County Sheriff's Office.
