After more than three decades of dedicated service, the Portland Police Department announces the retirement of Sergeant Joe Ezepek.

Sgt. Ezepek began his career with the department in 1993, graduating as Class President from the Maine Criminal Justice Academy. Prior to joining PPD, he attended Northeastern University, where he served as an ROTC Cadet Company Commander, later transferring to UMass Boston while remaining in the Northeastern ROTC program. He earned his bachelor’s degree in political science in 1989.

Sgt. Ezepek also served in the United States Army Reserves from 1981 to 1989 as an Infantry Platoon Leader and Transportation Corps Officer, receiving his commission as a Second Lieutenant in June 1983. He later earned a master’s degree in American and New England Studies from the University of Southern Maine in 2001.

During his time with the Portland Police Department, Sgt. Ezepek served the community in a variety of roles. He worked patrol, where he received the department’s heroism award for rescuing occupants from a burning building. After completing patrol technician training, he served as a patrol technician, before transferring to the Criminal Investigations Division (CID) in 1997.

While assigned to the Crimes Against Property Division, Sgt. Ezepek handled a wide range of cases. Beginning in 1999, he served as the primary detective for domestic violence investigations for seven years, demonstrating a strong commitment to protecting vulnerable members of the community.
He left CID in 2006 for a brief assignment in the traffic unit before being promoted to Sergeant in January 2007, returning to patrol where he would spend the remainder of his career. Sgt. Ezepek dedicated nearly 20 years to the night shift as a member of B Team and also served as a member of the department’s Honor Guard.

Throughout his career, Sgt. Ezepek remained committed to professional development, earning the FBI Trilogy Award by completing the Supervisor, Command and Executive Leadership Institutes.

Known for his steadiness and reliability, Sgt. Ezepek’s deep understanding of police work made him a go-to resource for others, all while prioritizing his people and their safety, while keeping the job grounded with humor.

We thank Sgt. Ezepek for his years of service, leadership, and dedication to the City of Portland and wish him all the best in his retirement.

From May 11–31, the Portland Police Department will participate in the annual Click It or Ticket initiative alongside the Maine Bureau of Highway Safety, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and law enforcement agencies throughout Maine. The effort highlights the importance of wearing a seat belt, one of the easiest and most proven ways to prevent serious injuries and save lives in traffic crashes.

The Portland Police Department, in partnership with the Portland Public Library, will host its third “Coffee with a Cop” event on Tuesday, June 2, from 10:15–11:30 AM at the Library’s downtown branch.

Following two successful events this spring, “Coffee with a Cop” continues to bring officers and community members together over coffee to talk, ask questions, and get to know one another in an informal setting.

Each year before Memorial Day, the Portland Police Department places memorial flags at the gravesites of the men and women who served this department with honor in cemeteries throughout Maine. The tradition recognizes their sacrifices and ensures their service to the City of Portland is never forgotten.

The program is funded and carried out entirely by current PPD officers and supervisors, who donate both their time and resources to place nearly 200 flags each year. To reduce waste and help manage program costs, the flags will be collected after July 4 for reuse in future years.

If you have a family member who served with the Portland Police Department and a flag has not been placed at their gravesite, please contact Detective Jeff Tully at [email protected]. Please include the individual’s name, approximate years of service, and gravesite information.

Thanks.

Several members of the Portland Police Department recently took part in Boston’s Run To Remember to honor fallen first responders. The team was running in memory of former PPD Sgt. Richard Betters. Winning the five-miler challenge race were J. Nadeau, J. McLean, J. Leadbetter and Jessie Lemieux (Fire Dept.), who completed the race in 1:41.53. Great job to everyone involved!

This Memorial Day, the Portland Police Department honors and remembers the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces who gave their lives in service to our nation.

Their sacrifice will never be forgotten, and we remain grateful for the freedoms they helped protect.

As we gather with family and friends, we encourage everyone to take a moment to reflect on the true meaning of Memorial Day.

We remember. We honor. We thank them.
