In partnership with Golden Rainbow Haven, Christ UMC is hosting a documentary screening of No Place to Grow Old at Christ United Methodist Church (12755 NW Dogwood St, Portland).

No Place to Grow Old, set in downtown Portland, is a poignant documentary following the lives of three older adults navigating the harsh realities of life without a home. Through their stories of hardship and resilience, the film offers an intimate portrayal of the challenges they face, while also shining a light on the systemic issues contributing to their plight.

Following the screening, a panel of local experts will discuss the realities and challenges of finding and providing safe, affordable housing. There will also be a community fair for resources and a silent auction to benefit Golden Rainbow Haven. Refreshments and childcare will also be provided.

On Aug. 26, 1920, the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution went into effect, assuring that the federal government could not deny someone the right to vote based on gender. was established by Congress in 1971 to commemorate the ratification of the 19th Amendment.

However, it wasn’t until 1965 that the Voting Rights Act provided similar rights for other historically excluded groups, including black women. So while we celebrate and honor the important victory that the 19th Amendment was, we must also remember that no victory is ever truly complete if someone is excluded.

Last Saturday, at EMO's Luther Memorial Building, Gov. Kotek hosted families and individuals impacted by federal cuts to SNAP benefits and a roundtable of experts, including Andrea Omojola, EMO's Director of Community Health Ministries, to discuss food insecurity and barriers to accessing SNAP benefits. The governor also toured NEFP EMO's emergency food program to learn more about how food pantries are trying, and not always able, to fill in the gaps when it comes to increasing food insecurity.

After four years as the executive director at EMO Executive Director Frank So will be leaving Wednesday, September 16, 2026, to start the role of chief executive officer at Oregon Humane. Frank has been a thoughtful leader with a clear vision for EMO. We will miss his dedication, his generosity, and his enthusiasm. We will be sharing updates about what’s next for EMO leadership soon. Until then all we can say is thank you Frank and you will be missed!
