Olivenbaum
Our mission is to bring peace through music.
"Olivenbaum," which means olive tree in German, symbolizes peace in many cultures. Olivenbaum is a non-profit organization that aims to bring peace through music. We are a group of high school and college students who "think globally and act locally." We saw that there was a lack of resources for many refugees in our neighborhoods and decided to provide ukulele lessons for students of refugees. First, because ukuleles are relatively cheap, and second because we can sing together while playing the ukulele. Some students are relatively new to our country and learning English is a challenge. By singing American folk songs, pop songs, as well as some folk songs from Iraq and Egypt, we are able to celebrate our differences, but more importantly, our similarities as human beings. We believe there is nothing more powerful than music that brings people together.
