One Day, One Story: A 74-year-old man came to Blanchet House asking how to find a place to stay—permanently. He seemed to have cognitive challenges. Our peer support team dropped everything to spend hours helping him connect with a case manager at a partner organization. We recommended that he go to the hospital for an evaluation, and he was happy to go. That’s where we left off. He was in good hands.

It was a hopeful ending to a long day of finding him care, but it’s scary to think about how easily a vulnerable person can become lost in the system.

His experience is a reminder that homelessness can happen at any age, and navigating a complicated system often requires patience, time, and human connection.

Emmett, an Eagle Scout, is building a labyrinth at Blanchet Farm to be used as a meditative tool for the men staying there. He held a fundraiser for the materials and built the labyrinth over three days with help from Barb Beck, friends, family, and residents of the farm.

A woman came to Blanchet House struggling to get around because of an injury. We didn’t have a suitable walking aid, so we reached out to our friends at CHAT. They came through with a wheeled walker! Community Health Assess & Treat (CHAT) is a program of Portland Fire & Rescue that responds to low-acuity medical needs. Thanks, CHAT!
