The East Fork Lewis River Reconnection Project will break ground later this year, but we are already prepping the area for work. The first loads of large logs and root wads started arriving on site last week. These Douglas fir logs in the photo were delivered to the site by Trout Mountain Forestry, who harvested them from a Metro Parks and Nature-owned natural area that is being restored to a native oak woodland. Ultimately, nearly 5,000 logs will be strategically placed along the East Fork Lewis River to increase habitat complexity, slow river flows, reduce erosion, and create habitat for juvenile salmon and other species. The new concourse at Portland International Airport blends civic and professional pride for those of us at Trout Mountain Forestry.

Four small woodland owner clients of ours supplied approximately 50,000 board feet of FSC-certified Douglas-fir logs, which were then sent to Kasters Kustom Cutting for milling into the ceiling lattice pieces.

Client suppliers include Camp Namanu, Camp Adams Up Close, the Hanschu/Doneen family, and Willamette University Zena Forest.

We hope projects like this will increase exposure to mass timber and alternative uses for wood, thereby generating an increased demand for local, high-quality Douglas-fir from sustainably managed forests.

The terminal's official public opening is August 14. Have you had a chance to sneak a peek yet?

Trout Mountain Forestry’s Winter work retreat was held this week at the stunning . Luckily, the weather was mild enough for us to take casual walks around the facilities, although it may not have been the best weather for post-retreat skiing.

As we return to our regular schedules later this week, which marks the beginning of the planting season, we are grateful for the work we do, the people we do it with, and the support we receive from each other.

Trout Mountain Forestry’s holiday season kicked off with an annual gathering this past weekend. We joined together with our families to celebrate the projects we’ve done this past year for our clients.

A key component of our gathering was honoring legacy TMF forester Mark Miller, as he begins his full-time retirement. Thank you, Mark, for the wisdom and skill you’ve shared with us and so many forestland owners in the Pacific Northwest. We look forward to witnessing more cycling and skiing adventures from Mark!

All of us at Trout Mountain Forestry are grateful for the opportunities to do such meaningful work together. We appreciate the trust placed in us by our clients and contractors throughout the year.

Thank you!

Did you know some trees wear sunscreen? Neither did I! Some heat-sensitive species such as western hemlock and noble fir are sprayed with a light-colored clay to protect their needles while growing in nurseries outside their preferred habitat. Pictured here is Trout Mountain Forester, Matt Fehrenbacher, on a visit to PRT Nurseries to inspect the seedlings we grow on contract, one of the many services we provide for our clients. Also pictured is Joe Ptasnik of PRT and sales manager Katie Wilson is showing off a containerized (“plug”) hemlock seedling with the whitish clay coating.
