International & Global Studies Winter Course Spotlight: United States & The World (INTL 296)⁣

This course will discuss topics such as the role of the US in world affairs in the 20th and 21st century, relations between the US and the Third World, and American globalism, diplomatic, economic, and geopolitical issues. Taught by Dr. Gerald Sussman.

What does a day doing research in Lisbon, Portugal look like? Well, something like this! Professor Smallman went to the Academy of Sciences Library, hoping to find a Jesuit priest’s study of traditional Chinese medicine. A very patient, dedicated, and helpful librarian, Senhor José Alencar, found a rare 18th century manuscript on this subject for him. This may look like any ordinary book, but it is not. It was handwritten, not printed, by a Jesuit priest, and gloves must be worn while handling it in order to protect its integrity. Professor Smallman is researching the 1918 influenza pandemic, and why it was relatively mild in China. Some Chinese scholars have said that China’s low death rate was because of Chinese medicine. Prof. Smallman was curious to know which traditional medicines were used against influenza, which medicines did hospitals in southern China use in 1918, and how well did doctors think they worked during the pandemic? Now he has some new ideas. Check back soon to see what he finds in the next stop on his trip, Coimbra!⁣

Professor Smallman is currently doing historical research in Lisbon, Portugal. This archivist kindly helped him to find records about Macau during the 1918 influenza pandemic. The other pictures show the interior of the Archivo Historico Ultramarino. Because this archive was once used as a religious center, it still has the empty alcoves where the saints were placed, and a ball to mark the hours.

Check out this cool Hollywood connection! Dr. Shawn Smallman's book, Dangerous Spirits, is mentioned in the new film, Antlers, directed by Scott Cooper and produced by Academy Award winning film maker Guillermo del Toro. Dr. Smallman's book talks about the windigo, a cannibal spirit prevalent in the traditional narratives of the Algonquian peoples of North America.
The film is set in Oregon and follows a school teacher and her sherrif brother who discover that one of her students is harboring a supernatural creature. Dr. Grace Dillon, a professor in PSU's School of Gender, Race and Nations, who is also a windigo expert, consulted for this movie. Show times and tickets linked below!

Meet our faculty!⁣
⁣
Dr. Rai (pronounced like Rye) has been with PSU for a little over three years. He came to PSU from Illinois, where he earned a Ph.D. in Geography, and before that, in Ohio, he earned a Master’s in International Development Studies. Dr. Rai was born and grew up in India and lived in Germany for a few years before moving to the US over a decade ago. His research interests include labor migration, rural development, climate adaptation, and gender and sexuality, focusing on India. He teaches required courses, such as a seminar in Climate and Society (INTL 407) and Global Studies Theories (INTL 415), and electives like Contemporary India (INTL 321U), Global Migration (INTL 375U), and Gender and International Development (INTL/WS 349U). Dr. Rai’s courses draw on materials from across the world, especially Latin America, Africa, and Asia.⁣⁣ 🌏

When he is not teaching or researching, he enjoys cooking and baking (ask him about his recent adventures with Armenian-American food, thanks to a cookbook presented to him by his partner!), hiking, reading, watching shows and movies (his last movie was Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch, which he can’t stop talking about), traveling, visiting museums, and watching ballets and plays (in no particular order.) Dr. Rai is looking forward to welcoming students to his new office in the Urban Center (470G); his office still has comfortable chairs and a bowl of Ghirardelli Minis on the coffee table for the visitors! 😊🍫
