Galognano Chianti Colli Senesi 2024!

This is a blend of 85% Sangiovese, 5% Colorino, 5% Canaiolo, 5% Ciliegiolo, from vines aged about 50 years, planted at 280 meters altitude.  After destemming and soft pressing, the juice begins fermentation on the skins with natural yeasts. Initial fermentation on the skins lasts for about 15 days: how ever long the fermentation takes. Erika racks the fermenting juice off and after some decanting, the wine remains in concrete tanks for 5 months, until bottling. All of the winemaking and aging takes place in concrete tanks.

Renardat Fache Bugey Cerdon Methode Ancestrale Rose

Renardat Fache is a small but famous old family winery in the tiny region of Bugey, halfway between Geneva and Lyons. Bugey is on the way to the Jura, and it’s quite mountainous, but at a lower elevation. The whole AOC is just 170 hectares! Renardat Fache is a 7th generation winery run by Alain Renardat… and people have been telling me about this wine for years!  They’re a legendary old school producer of the Louis Dressner portfolio, but it wasn’t available. The grapes are picked by hand, pressed and fermented in cold vats until the alcohol reaches about six degrees of alcohol. After a light filtration that leaves most of the active yeast in the unfinished wine, it is bottled and continues its fermentation in the bottle, reaching about 7.5 or 8 degrees of alcohol and retaining a fair quantity of its original sugar. It is more vinous (with grapey primary aromas) than most Champagne, since there is neither dosage nor addition of yeast before the second fermentation. The opportunity popped up this spring to purchase a partial pallet from the winery so I jumped at it. And wow, it’s delicious! Unfortunately They were hit by a late frost in 2024 so there won’t be any wine next year, this is our only shot at it.

2025 Caneva da Nani is here! I love this wine. I love how it tastes and I love what it represents. It’s so thirst quenching and fun plus the price is still really great for what you get. It’s a wine made by a family going against the market consolidation and commercialization that dominates Prosecco.  And did I mention how super delicious and thirst quenching this is?  It is really absolutely fantastic!

Adrien was born in Alsace, but his father Vincent and his mother split up when he was young and she moved with him to the south west of France, so that’s where Adrien actually grew up.  He went back to Alsace on holidays and in the summer to see his father, but really he grew up in the southwest. Eventually he went to university and actually became a banker working in international finance, but he really loved being outside and hiking and mountain climbing, he hated working at a computer all day. He also regretted that he was disconnected from his father and the whole wine making history of his family, so after lots of talk with his father in 2019 he quite his banking job and moved to Alsace to start working at his family’s domaine. He loved being outside and it was great being back with his father. Between his father and reading wine making text books he started to get a foundation in the technical process of wine making and he was learning by doing.

Moretti Omero Terre di Giano 2025! Rich, full, juicy 100% Ciliegiolo from one of the highest elevation spots in Montefalco

You can find this at Walpole Barn, 44 North, Lighthouse wine and Seafood, Vessel & Vine, Maine & Loire, and the Blue Hill Wine Shop

I've visited Moretti Omero and his daughter Giusy in Umbria a whole slew of times. They’re a great family winery that’s unpretentious but also thoughtful and working at a high level. Moretti Omero was effectively started by Omero Moretti (Omero is the Italian version of the name Homer) back in 1991. His father had made some wine but it was small scale and Omero had started out with olive oil production and pig farming. Years ago he told me that the neighbors all complained about the smell of the pigs so much that he had to quit! It was good timing though as the Montefalco Rosso DOC was starting to take off and the Sagrantino di Montefalco DOC had just been created.
