This is an important message from the Centennial School District.
As you may know, COVID-19 cases are at all-time highs and continue to spread rapidly in the community. Since returning from winter break, responding to COVID-19 challenges has become increasingly difficult due to higher than average student and staff absences. Every one of our schools and departments have been impacted.
Based on current numbers and forecasts, it’s anticipated that we will have a high number of staff absent on Friday, January 14, 2022, which will create a significant staffing challenge to safely operate our schools. As a result, the Board took action to convert Friday, January 14, 2022, from a student contact day into a staff in-service day. This means that on Friday, January 14, 2022, there will be no school for students.
Grab & Go meals will be available at all schools on Friday, January 14, 2022, from 11am to noon.
At the January 12, 2022, Board meeting, the Centennial School Board was provided a status update about COVID-19 data in our community, staff and student absence data, staff and student positive COVID-19 and close contact numbers, and the challenges with keeping up with contact tracing. This informed their decision to cancel school on Friday, January 14, 2022.
The decision to cancel a school day is not taken lightly. Multiple factors are considered, and in this case, safety was the primary concern as adequate staffing is needed to safely operate our schools.
As a reminder, there will be no school on Monday, January 17, 2022 in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. School will resume for in-person instruction on Tuesday, January 18, 2022.
Centennial School District leadership continues to track public health and monitor the surge in COVID-19 cases in our community and state.
We are working hard to keep our schools open for in-person instruction while practicing layered mitigation measures. Please help do your part to prevent the spread of COVID-19: stay home if sick, wear a face covering, maintain social distancing, and wash hands frequently. Also, vaccination remains the best protection against serious illness from COVID-19 and reduces the spread of COVID-19.
We know this is a particularly difficult time for our students, staff, families, and community. We appreciate your flexibility and understanding as we navigate through another challenging time of operating school during a pandemic.
