What does it take to keep water flowing? đź’§

Sometimes, it looks like this.

Excavators. Trenches. New pipe. Crews working in the road. A whole lot of digging. 🚧

Right now, crews are replacing aging water mains as part of Portland Water District’s ongoing investment in our water system.

Most of us don't think about the pipes beneath our streets. When the system is working the way it should, you turn on the tap and water is there.

But keeping that water flowing takes investment in the infrastructure underneath us.

Today’s work helps build a more reliable water system for tomorrow.

One of the best ways to enhance your property, protect local water quality, and create habitat for Maine’s wildlife is by planting wildflowers, shrubs, and trees that are native to Maine. Portland Water District is partnering with Maine Audubon to bring the native plants closer to those living around Sebago Lake with a Native Plant Sale in Standish. A wide selection of plants will be available, and Maine Audubon and Portland Water District staff will be on hand to help visitors choose plants suited to their property.

Anyone living in the Sebago Lake watershed who purchases plants can go home with a complimentary yard sign to proudly display their stewardship of Sebago Lake and Maine’s wildlife with native plants.

Even better, 10% of proceeds from the sale will support Sebago Clean Waters, a collaborative of 11 organizations, including PWD, working to conserve forests, support forest stewardship, and restore stream connectivity and habitat in the Sebago Lake watershed. SCW staff and information will be on hand at the event!

💧 It’s Fun Fact Friday!

Let’s talk Wastewater, by the Numbers👀

Every day, the Portland Water District:
🚽 Treats 18–22 million gallons of wastewater across four treatment plants
🏗️ Operates 77 sewer lift stations across six communities to help move wastewater through the system
🏭 Works with 44 industrial partners through our Industrial Pretreatment Program, ensuring treatment plants aren’t harmed and the environment is protected from wastewater coming from their business.

That’s a LOT happening behind the scenes to keep wastewater moving, treated and on its way back to the environment.🌊

And this is just the beginning!đź’§

🎉 We’re 25% complete!🎉

We’ve officially replaced more than 25% of the water meters across the Portland Water District’s service area as part of our Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) project!

VEPO Metering installers are currently working in nearly every community we serve. When it’s time for your neighborhood, you’ll receive a letter with instructions to schedule your appointment.

These new meters are an important investment in the future of our water system, and will eventually give customers access to tools like water-use tracking and leak alerts.

25% down, and we’re just getting started!💧
