The Good Samaritan Food Bank of North Portland is incorporated as a private, non-profit corporation that distributes food to the unemployed, the under-employed who cannot support their families as well as Senior Citizens in need. Dedicated volunteers from the private sector who help by interviewing, keeping records, transporting food, packaging bulk supplies, filling out requisitions, collecting f
ood from donors and countless other duties. Consider these words from a letter sent to France 160 years ago, the Frenchman Alexis De Tocqueville:
"These Americans are the most peculiar people in the world. In a local community in their country a citizen may conceive of some need which is not being met. He goes across the street and discusses it with his neighbor. A committee comes into existence and then the committee begins functioning on behalf of that need, and you won't believe this but it's true. All this is done without reference to any bureaucrat. AH of this is done by the private citizens on their own initiative. "Americans of all ages, all conditions, and all dispositions consistently form associations... to give entertainments, to found seminaries, to build inns, to construct churches, to diffuse books, to send missionaries to the antipodes... The health of a democratic society may be measured by the quality of functions performed by private citizens." Let's keep alive De Tocqueville's admiration .....of the way private citizens cooperate to fulfill a need. By becoming a volunteer, sharing your time & talents with others in this worthwhile project. By becoming a supporter of the Food Bank, through your contribution of food and/or finances.
