Mechanics' Hall celebrates the rich history of Maine's earliest creative class - "the mechanics" - through literary arts programs, music, performance, and more while working to restore our landmark building as a vibrant cultural resource. ABOUT MECHANICS' HALL: History & Today
In 1815, the Maine Charitable Mechanic Association formed to support Maine's earliest creative class - "the mecha
nics." They were blacksmiths, coopers, artists, innovators, and creators. Between 1857 and 1859, they built Mechanics' Hall in Portland – a communal gathering space with a stunning ballroom and a lending library at its center. Today, Mechanics' Hall celebrates that rich history through literary arts programs, music, performance, and the humanities while working to restore our landmark building as a vibrant cultural resource for audiences and organizations throughout New England. The general interest library, the 8th oldest of its kind in the United States, continues to circulate books to anyone who wishes to join. Located at the center of the Portland Arts District, The Hall was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. In November 2022, the National Parks Service designated the building as Nationally Significant for its association with events that significantly contributed to American history's culture.
