On August 25, Consul General Todoriki attended an exchange event in Keizer between a junior high school delegation from Iyo City in Ehime Prefecture and the City of Keizer, Oregon. With remarks from representatives, a koto performance, a rousing sing-along of “Ue o Muite Arukō 上を向いて歩こう” (“Sukiyaki”), and performances by the students, everyone enjoyed a delightful time of cultural exchange.

On Sunday, August 16, Consul General Todoriki was invited to the annual Nikkei Community Picnic held at Oaks Park. Although this year's event was held indoors, many people attended. Japanese dishes were served, and there were sing-alongs of nostalgic Japanese songs, a raffle, and bingo, making for an enjoyable time.

On August 3, a reception celebrating the 35th anniversary of the sister-state relationship between Toyama Prefecture and Oregon was held at the beautiful Portland Japanese Garden.
Consul General Ken Todoriki delivered remarks celebrating 35 years of friendship and cooperation between Toyama and Oregon.
The reception brought together a wonderful group of guests from a wide range of fields, including government and politics, business, culture, education, and people with connections to Toyama.
It was also a special occasion to see former Oregon Governor Barbara Roberts, who was serving as Governor when Toyama Prefecture and Oregon established their sister-state relationship in 1991.
Here’s to many more years of friendship and exchange between Toyama and Oregon!

On Saturday, August 8, Consul General Todoriki was invited to and attended a tea gathering at Lewis & Clark College, where he delivered remarks. Organized by ceramic artist Richard Milgrim and his wife, Mari Milgrim, the event is part of "The Imagine Project: Peace Through a Bowl of Tea," held at select locations around the world to convey a message of peace. After Mr. Milgrim spoke about his background and the purpose of the gathering, Mrs. Mari Milgrim of Japan's Urasenke school served sweets and tea using the tea bowl named "Imagine," which was crafted by Mr. Milgrim with hopes for peace. Through this event, attendees had the opportunity to experience the Japanese cultural tradition of tea ceremony.

On August 3, a delegation from Toyama Prefecture, led by Governor Hachiro Nitta, visited our office during their visit to Oregon to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the sister-state relationship between Toyama and Oregon.
Consul General Todoriki welcomed the delegation and shared an overview of Oregon, including the strong and growing connections between Oregon and Japan.
Over the past 35 years, the friendship between Toyama and Oregon has been strengthened through countless exchanges and personal connections. We hope to see this special relationship continue to grow and reach new heights in the years ahead.
The Consular Office of Japan in Portland is proud to work hand in hand with Toyama Prefecture and our partners in Oregon to further deepen the ties between our two regions.

On August 1, the International Abacus Classic was held in Portland, bringing together approximately 180 participants from the United States, Canada, and Japan.
Consul General Todoriki joined Governor Nitta of Toyama Prefecture, the host site of the next World Championship, and Oregon Secretary of State Tobias Read in offering congratulatory remarks to the participants. Consul General Todoriki also presented trophies to the winners during the awards ceremony.
The vision of "Soroban Diplomacy" – using a traditional Japanese tool to connect people across cultures – is both inspiring and deeply meaningful. We sincerely hope that every participant leaves not only with enhanced abacus skills, but also with new friendships and a sense of connection that transcends borders.

On Friday, July 31st, 32 members of the 40th cohort of the Japan Exchange & Teaching (JET) Program departing from Portland gathered for an orientation and farewell reception at the Wells Fargo Center. They were joined by members of Japan-related business, cultural, and academic communities.

During the reception, Consul General Todoriki offered warm remarks, the departing JET Program participants and attendees enjoyed socializing, and JET Program alumni shared sempai advice and fond memories of Japan, creating a lively atmosphere. We extend our congratulations to this year's cohort as they begin their adventures across Japan as Assistant Language Teachers and Coordinators for International Relations.

We wish them all the best as they start this exciting new chapter in Japan and we celebrate the 40th anniversary of the JET Program!
