Ready to make a difference in your community? The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office is hiring Corrections Deputies.

Congratulations to all the runners finishing the 2026 Hood to Coast Relay in Seaside today! Your grit, teamwork, and determination over nearly 200 miles from Mount Hood to the Oregon Coast are truly inspiring. We’re grateful the event wrapped up safely and smoothly.

The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office was honored to provide support along Highway 30 between Portland and Scappoose, helping ensure a safe experience for participants, volunteers, and the communities along the route.

Thank you to everyone who played a part in making this iconic relay a success.

Kids are headed back to school!

As buses return to neighborhood streets, we’re reminding everyone to help keep students safe. Whether you’re behind the wheel or walking your child to the bus stop, a little extra awareness goes a long way.

Key safety reminders:
• Always stop for school buses when the red lights are flashing and the stop-arm is extended.
• Slow down when yellow lights are flashing, as the bus is preparing to stop.
• Give kids space: children are most at risk when approaching or leaving a school bus.
• Make eye contact with the bus driver before crossing in front of the bus.
• Students should wait for the bus at least 10 feet (about 5 giant steps) away from the curb.

Let’s work together to make this school year a safe and successful one for all students.

Happy National Dog Day!

Today we’re celebrating the incredible dogs who are part of the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office family, both on duty and at home.

First, a huge thank‑you to our hardworking K‑9 partners Brando, Hans, Meadow, and our Comfort Dog Burton. Every day, they show extraordinary dedication, skill, and heart as they help keep our community safe and support our team.

We also want to honor a few of the beloved family dogs who stand by our deputies and professional staff at home... offering unconditional love, comic relief, and the kind of support only a dog can give.

A special shout‑out to Bella, Frankie, Bolt, Thor, Charley, Harley, Cheddar, Daphne, Dobby, Princess, Ranger, Chief, Tuuli, Ollie, Peanut, and Skip!

Are you a leader who is interested in supervising, directing, and coordinating the operations and activities of a support unit? Do you like to plan, organize, and supervise operational functions and activities? Develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure compliance with all Federal, state, and local laws? Are you able to effectively communicate with ALL people, including the public, top senior officials, and adults in custody?

End of Watch: August 21, 2003

Today we honor the memory of Multnomah County Deputy Irving Burkett, who gave everything in the line of duty.

Deputy Burkett was critically injured while courageously attempting to alert fellow deputies during a violent escape attempt at Rocky Butte Jail on July 25, 1982. His injuries left him permanently disabled, and he passed away years later from complications related to the shooting.

Deputy Burkett served MCSO with dedication for 14 years and is remembered for his bravery.

On this 23rd anniversary of his passing, we honor Deputy Burkett’s sacrifice and the legacy and loved ones he left behind.

We will never forget.

With next of kin notification complete, MCSO is releasing the identity of the adult in custody who died at the Multnomah County Inverness Jail on Thursday, August 20, 2026. The deceased is 48-year-old David Rivera Godinez.

The death investigation is ongoing. No further information will be released at this time.

MCSO Initiates In-custody Death Investigation at Inverness Jail

MULTNOMAH COUNTY, Ore. (MCSO) – The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) is investigating the death of an adult in custody at the Multnomah County Inverness Jail (MCIJ).

At approximately 5:10 a.m. on Thursday, August 20, 2026, deputies assigned to MCIJ responded to an incident involving a 48-year-old man who appeared to be experiencing a medical event in his cell and became unresponsive.
