Urban Wings and Aerospace Leadership Club strives to serve today’s young people by emulating the Character, Courage, and Commitment of the historic Tuskegee Airmen. Consistent with that vision our motto affirms that “We fly planes, but we study leadership.” Our partnership with Genesis Community Fellowship Church, generous community donations, and our reflection in the newsletter of the Port of Portland enable us to run a full class of middle school and junior high students in Fall, Winter, and Spring terms with a pair of week-long summer academies. It is a club not a program, giving youngsters practice at organization concepts as well as aviation skills. Parents and family play an active role, but it is the constant stream of active commercial pilots and aviators from across the country that add excitement and authenticity to our efforts. In particular, Tuskegee Airmen Lt. Val Archer of Atlanta is one of the founders of Urban Wings and donated his Bronze Medallion issued by the U.S. Congress in 2006.
