Portland Mayor Keith Wilson and Councilor Steve Novick today announced a combined $20,000 contribution to support the City of Newport's ongoing legal fight to prevent a federal contractor from establishing an ICE detention and processing facility at the Newport Municipal Airport.

The contribution, $10,000 from the Mayor's Office budget and $10,000 from Councilor Novick's Office budget, comes in response to a formal request from Newport Mayor Jan Kaplan.

This work was coordinated and led by Brenda Alvarado, the City of Portland's Immigrant Affairs Lead, appointed earlier this year to oversee sanctuary compliance, immigrant safety initiatives, and community coordination on immigration‑related issues. Alvarado worked closely with legal partners, advocates like Portland Immigrant Rights Coalition, ensuring Portland's response aligned with legal precedent and community‑driven priorities.

Last week we were honored to welcome community members representing dozens of African immigrant organizations to our first African Immigrant Community Forum and the second event in this series. Thank you to our partners at Oregon DOJ, Portland Immigrant Rights Coalition, and Innovation Law Lab for equipping families with trusted legal information, Know Your Rights education, and practical tools to help protect themselves and their communities.

Led by the City's Immigrant Affairs Lead, these forums are designed to help immigrant communities understand their rights, prepare for immigration enforcement, and connect with trusted legal and community resources before a crisis occurs. By bringing together community leaders, advocates, and government partners, we're building knowledge, strengthening resilience, and ensuring families have the information they need to protect themselves and one another.

Thank you also to City Councilor Elana Pirtle-Guiney, Senator Kayse Jama and the Somali American Council of Oregon, for their partnership in hosting this event.

We're looking forward to our upcoming Dreamer and Middle Eastern Community immigrant forums and many more after that. Together, we're building stronger, safer, and more connected communities.

I am extremely grateful to the Timbers for how they show up and care for our community. Next week is their 15th annual Stand Together Week, an initiative that supports nonprofit projects and creates volunteer opportunities throughout the Portland metro area.

Fans like you are invited to volunteer alongside players and Timber Joey at over 30 projects that serve 20 different nonprofits and mobilize more than 600 volunteers. Projects are centered around youth, families and the environment.

One of the highlights last week for me was celebrating the
new campus of the National University of Natural Medicine,
right in downtown Portland.

Prosper Portland provided a $300,000 grant to the university
for capital improvements to an existing office building. And
guess what’s happening to NUNM’s previous building -- it’s
being turned into housing.

There is so much here to be grateful for, including the 400
students pursuing careers in holistic healing, woven into
the vibrant fabric of downtown life.

It’s a great moment for Portland when a respected 70-year￾old learning institution, such as NUNM, chooses to call the
central city home.

LGBTQIA2S+ Portlanders strengthen our city every day through their contributions to civic, cultural, artistic, educational, economic, and public life — as artists, advocates, educators, organizers, entrepreneurs, public servants, neighbors, caregivers, and community leaders.

Portland has hosted Pride celebrations since 1971 and Pride marches since 1970. In 2026, we mark the 55th anniversary of Pride celebrations in Portland and around the world.

Pride is both a celebration and a call to action. It honors the generations who fought for equality while recommitting us to building a future where all people can live openly, safely, and authentically.

The City of Portland recognizes that safety, belonging, and liberation require ongoing action and investment. We remain committed to advancing policies, services, and partnerships that affirm and support LGBTQIA2S+ residents, employees, and visitors.

The City of Portland recognizes World Refugee Day to honor refugees and displaced people around the world. First established by the United Nations in 2001, World Refugee Day is recognized each year on June 20th.

World Refugee Day highlights the millions of people who seek safety from war, famine, climate disasters, religious and political oppression, and displacement around the world.

Anyone can become a refugee and has the right to seek safety.

Juneteenth has evolved into a way to pay homage to ancestors and celebrate Black culture, liberation, and the achievements of Black Americans.

This holiday also presents a powerful opportunity for critical reflection, social action, and examination of our progress or lack thereof towards racial equity and justice.
