It was an honor to attend the Interfaith Black Clergy Prayer Breakfast— this is an annual event that honors Black history, celebrates local leadership, and unites civic, religious, and educational leaders in recognition of Juneteenth!

It’s Juneteenth! 💛❤️💚 I’m really glad that my head of staff, Mary Li and I got to go to the 5th Annual Interfaith Black Clergy Prayer Breakfast today. I saw many of my City Council colleagues: Councilor Loretta Smith Councilor Dan Ryan Sameer Kanal Elana Pirtle-Guiney Councilor Steve Novick Keith Wilson ☺️

I squealed when I saw Ellis, who I taught in both kindergarten and first grade! Made me think about the next generation that is coming up and is oh so wonderful!! I’m so proud of you, Ellis, we all are— and I know your beloved mama would be also ❤️❤️

Portland has the opportunity to join other cities leading the way for building more just, mutually-beneficial partnerships between public-private entities. I am hopeful that we can create a process, and ultimately a result, that allows more Portlanders to benefit!

Other Municipalities in the Community Benefits Agreement Movement. The CBA movement began in California in the early 2000s, where coalitions in Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose, and the Bay Area used CBAs and other tools to realize the tremendous social justice potential of economic development and land use planning. Since then, organizations in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Denver, Indianapolis, Miami, Milwaukee, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Pittsburgh, New Orleans, New York City, Seattle, and Washington D.C. have pursued a community benefits approach to major economic development projects, often successfully.

Lowering driving speeds is a Vision Zero priority. Vision Zero is our City’s initiative to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries.

Safe travel speeds reduce the likelihood of crashes and, when crashes do occur, significantly reduce the risk of death or serious injury.

As people travel faster, the risk of death or serious injury rises dramatically. We know that a pedestrian struck by a person driving 40 mph is four times more likely to die than a pedestrian struck at 20 mph. Research suggests that lower speed limits lead to lower driving speeds, especially for people driving more than 10 mph over the limit.

Orange slide reads: Speed Limits Make a Difference. There is a visual representation with speedometers. It says, at 20 mph, there is a 10% likelihood of fatality or severe injury. At 30mph, 40%, and at 40 mp, 80% likelihood.
