Victoria Mansion will be open this Saturday and Sunday, but we will be closed on Monday, September 7th for Labor Day.

Summer vacation is winding down for Portland students. They will be heading back to school this week.

When the Libby family moved into what is now Victoria Mansion, the three youngest children went to grammar school at the Butler School. This beautiful building still stands on nearby Pine and West Streets. It is now an apartment building.

Victoria Mansion members had a chance to see the Mansion's rooms in natural light at our recent open shutters event. We normally keep the windows covered to protect the museum collection, but this evening gave people a chance to view the spaces as they would have been seen in the 19th century.

Guitarist Bruno Panunzio provided music to complete the evening.

Earlier this month, Victoria Mansion partnered with preservationist John Leeke and plasterer Peter Lord to offer a two-week course in the repair and replication of historic flat plaster finishes. These students learned how to apply plaster to both sawn and metal lath as well as how to match plaster systems and materials to do repair work.

Victoria Mansion is committed to helping tradespeople acquire the specialized skills required to work sensitively on older buildings through our Preservation Trades Training Workshops.

Our final intern spotlight is Nora Hanscom! Nora is a rising sophomore at Boston University in Boston, Massachusetts. She is studying both English and Public Relations. Nora’s favorite spot in the house is the Green Bedroom and Bathroom.
“I think this internship will help my future career because it has allowed me to learn new ways to create social media posts, for an account that is not for personal use. I’m at the point where I am not sure of my plans after college, but this internship has helped me start to form a plan on what field I would like to go into.”

Happy Mail Order Catalog Day!
Today, we can easily run to a local store or order just about anything off the internet. In the nineteenth century, particularly in rural areas such as parts of Maine, mail order catalogs were an important resource to get the goods people needed.
JR Libby, second owner of Victoria Mansion, had large stores in Biddeford and Portland. The company also had mail order catalogs, explaining "If You can't Come to Our Store We must Bring Our Store to You."
The catalog was over a hundred pages long and offered a wide variety of goods, including clothing, furniture, books and household items. Shipping was free for packages over five dollars if cash to pay was included with the order. (Otherwise, shipping was one cent per ounce.)

Most of the walls of Victoria Mansion are painted in tromp l'oeil style. It is intended to "fool the eye" and trick you into thinking a two-dimensional painting is three-dimensional object. This Stair Hall painting of a young lady appears to be framed by a sculpted cartouche when viewed from a distance. When looking closer, one can see it is indeed flat and can even see the artist's brushstrokes.
This part of the wall has been recently cleaned. Our paint conservators leave a small window to show the contrast to its pre-cleaned condition. (It is the dark rectangle in the lower left of first photo.)

Victoria Mansion is located on the edge of Portland's West End. Guests often ask us what other places they should visit in the neighborhood. Portland's Fire Museum is just a few blocks away at 157 Spring St.
The museum is housed in a 1837 fire station and is run by the Portland Veteran Firemen's Association. It is two floors full of interesting exhibits. Visitors will see an extensive collection of fire equipment and also learn how fires have shaped the history of the city. The stalls for the horses that pulled the original fire trucks give a good idea of how the interior of the Mansion's Carriage House may have looked as well!
The Fire Museum is open on Wednesdays through October from 11am-3pm. It would make a lovely stop before or after your Victoria Mansion tour!

If you are visiting the Mansion, make sure to allow extra time for parking. The Mansion was built in a residential neighborhood, leaving little to no room for parking lots. All of the free parking surrounding the Mansion is street parking, which can often take longer than expected. Streets that often have available parking include, Park, High, State and Danforth.
