🇷🇴🥇 DAVID POPOVICI — CHAMPION, AGAIN

Another gold, another statement. At the European Aquatics Championships 2026 in Paris, David Popovici defended his 100m freestyle title for the third year running touching in 46.56, a championship record, edging out Egor Kornev (46.74) with Kristof Milak taking bronze.

The swim marks the 3rd-fastest 100m freestyle ever recorded, trailing only Pan Zhanle's world record and Popovici's own personal best.

"It feels good. It feels as if all of the training makes sense," Popovici said afterwards. A young athlete, an old habit of winning — and Romania could not be prouder. 🇷🇴

Kornev pushes David Popovici all the way, as the Romanian sets a new CR of 46.56 in the 100m Free 😱

🌍 12 August – International Youth Day
Today's Youth, Tomorrow's Leaders

Young people are shaping the future through their ideas, creativity and determination. Across the world, they are driving innovation, advancing scientific discovery, preserving cultural heritage and building more inclusive and sustainable communities.

Romania believes that investing in young people means investing in a better future. Through education, cultural exchanges, research partnerships and international cooperation, young people gain not only knowledge but also the confidence and skills to become active citizens and global leaders.

The friendship between Romania and Sri Lanka is strengthened by every student, researcher, artist and young professional who builds bridges of understanding between our two countries. These personal connections create lasting partnerships that extend far beyond classrooms and borders.

On International Youth Day, the Embassy of Romania in Sri Lanka and the Maldives celebrates the energy, talent and aspirations of young people everywhere, and reaffirms its commitment to supporting opportunities that encourage learning, dialogue and international cooperation.

The future is built by young people who are curious enough to learn, courageous enough to lead, and open enough to connect with the world.

Happy International Youth Day!

🇷🇴✈️🇱🇰 Exploring new opportunities for Romania–Sri Lanka tourism cooperation

How can we bring more Romanian visitors to Sri Lanka—and encourage more Sri Lankans to discover Romania?

These were among the key topics discussed during a meeting between the Embassy of Romania and the leadership of the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB).

The exchange focused on practical initiatives to strengthen tourism ties, including closer cooperation with the travel industry, participation in international tourism fairs, joint promotional campaigns, improved air connectivity, and facilitating travel between our two countries.

Looking ahead, 2027 will mark the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Romania and Sri Lanka—a milestone that offers an excellent opportunity to launch ambitious joint initiatives. Ideas discussed included cultural events, concerts, influencer collaborations, television programmes, and film productions showcasing Sri Lanka to Romanian and European audiences.

The Embassy of Romania remains committed to working closely with its Sri Lankan partners to strengthen people-to-people connections and promote our two countries as attractive travel destinations.

🇷🇴🇱🇰 Tourism builds bridges—and every journey brings our nations closer.

🎼 Where Tomorrow's Musical Stars Take the Stage

On 23 August, the curtains rise on the 20th George Enescu International Competition, one of the world's leading classical music competitions for young performers.

Held in the magnificent Romanian Athenaeum in Bucharest, this prestigious competition brings together some of the most talented young musicians from around the globe in the fields of violin, cello, piano and composition. The 2026 edition runs until 19 September under the theme "In Search of Excellence."

The opening concert will be conducted by internationally acclaimed Romanian maestro Cristian Măcelaru, together with the National Radio Orchestra and the winners of the 2024 edition—violinist Mayumi Kanagawa, cellist Yo Kitamura and pianist Roman Lopatynskyi. Their return to the stage perfectly reflects one of the Competition's main goals: supporting outstanding young artists as they begin their international careers.

More than a competition, the George Enescu International Competition is a celebration of talent, dedication and artistic excellence, continuing the legacy of Romania's greatest composer while inspiring a new generation of musicians.

We wish every participant the very best of success and look forward to another extraordinary edition.

🎻 May the music inspire us all.

🌻 Romania Through the Seasons | August

August is a season of abundance in Romania.

Golden sunflower fields turn towards the summer sun, orchards are heavy with fruit, vineyards ripen across rolling hills, and villages come alive with harvest traditions that have been passed down through generations.

From the plains of southern Romania to the hills of Transylvania and the peaceful countryside of Maramureș, August is a time when nature offers its richest colours and warmest light. It is a season of long evenings, fresh local produce and landscapes that invite visitors to slow down and appreciate the beauty of rural life.

Every month reveals a different face of Romania. August reminds us that the country's greatest treasures are found not only in its historic cities and cultural landmarks, but also in its living countryside, where nature, tradition and community continue to flourish together.

The Embassy of Romania in Sri Lanka and the Maldives invites you to discover Romania—one season at a time.

🏛 Romania & Sri Lanka | A Shared Commitment to World Heritage

Across continents, Romania and Sri Lanka are home to places of outstanding universal value—sites that tell the story of humanity, celebrate cultural diversity and preserve remarkable natural landscapes.

Romania is proud to have UNESCO World Heritage Sites ranging from the painted monasteries of Bucovina and the Dacian Fortresses of the Orăștie Mountains to the unique Danube Delta, one of Europe's greatest wetlands.

Sri Lanka's UNESCO sites are equally extraordinary, including the Sacred City of Anuradhapura, Sigiriya, the Old Town of Galle and its Fortifications, the Central Highlands, and the Sinharaja Forest Reserve.

Although separated by thousands of kilometres, our countries share a common responsibility: to preserve these treasures for future generations and to promote the values of education, culture and sustainable conservation.

Heritage belongs to all of us.
