Yesterday morning department members came together at Payson Park in City of Portland, Maine to participate in this year's Tunnel to Towers 5K Walk and Run to benefit the Tunnel to Towers Foundation! Our members joined over 100 other participants to have fun and raise money for a great cause.

This race is organized yearly by FF Ralph Munroe (Ladder 3, Platoon 3). We wanted to thank FF Munroe for his time and dedication to this organization and terrific event, and we wanted to thank all the volunteers and organizers who helped make yesterday's race so fun and successful!

📚 Back to School Safety 📚

City of Portland, Maine Public Schools are back in session on Monday, August 31st.

As students return to school, our roads, sidewalks, crosswalks, and school zones will be busier. Please take a little extra time and stay alert behind the wheel.

🚸 Watch for children in school zones, neighborhoods, sidewalks, and crosswalks.

🚌 Stop for school buses when their red lights are flashing.

📱 Put the phone down and keep your attention on driving.

🚗 Slow down and follow posted school-zone speed limits.

🚶 Yield to pedestrians and give children and families plenty of time and space to cross safely.

Please plan ahead, give yourself a little extra time, and remember that getting there safely is what matters.

Today, we also remember FF/P Chris Fabian on the 6th anniversary of his passing.

Chris died battling pancreatic cancer in 2020. He was appointed to the department in September 1999 and was assigned to Engine Company 1, Platoon 1 at Munjoy Hill Fire Station, prior to his cancer diagnosis.

Chris was a dear friend to many and a respected firefighter and paramedic to all. We miss and love you, and you will never be forgotten, brother.

We remember Captain John E. Tolan, badge #10, who on this day in 1956 died in the line of duty. Captain Tolan joined the department in 1938 assigned to Engine 5, was promoted to lieutenant in 1943 assigned to Engine 4, and was promoted to captain in 1949, originally assigned to Engine 2, then Ladder 5, before being transferred to Engine 6 in 1955.

Captain Tolan died from a medical event suffered on scene at Box 2-917, a two-alarm fire at 96 Highland Street. He was 47 years old.

For his supreme sacrifice he is remembered, and in the dedication and courage of all our active and retired members, and all firefighters past and present, his spirit lives on.

Earlier today, the Portland Fire Department was dispatched to a Weymouth Street property for an automatic fire alarm indicating water flow. Upon arrival, crews discovered that a kitchen fire had been extinguished by a single fire sprinkler head.

Fortunately, no one was injured, and damage was limited to minor water damage in only two units.

This incident is another powerful example of how quickly and effectively residential fire sprinkler systems can control a fire—protecting lives, limiting property damage, and giving occupants valuable time to escape.

Police Investigating Fatal Hit-and-Run on Forest Avenue

PORTLAND, Maine - At approximately 9:18 p.m. on August 24, 2026, Portland Police responded to the area of 1837 Forest Avenue for a report of a pedestrian who had been struck by a vehicle.
A 57-year-old woman was found deceased at the scene. Witnesses reported that the woman was crossing Forest Avenue when she was struck.

The vehicle involved fled the scene. Witnesses described it as a dark colored pickup truck, which was last seen traveling inbound on Forest Avenue.

The victim’s identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Members of the Portland Police Department’s Crash Reconstruction Team responded to the scene and conducted a detailed investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. The investigation remains ongoing, and no additional information is currently available.

Police are asking anyone who witnessed the crash, has information about the incident, or may have surveillance, dashcam, doorbell, or other video from the area at the time of the crash to contact investigators. Anyone who may have seen the suspect vehicle before or after the crash, or who may have information that could assist with the investigation, is asked to call 207-874-8575.

Nearly 25 years ago, after coming off shift on 9/11, FDNY Firefighter Stephen Siller, assigned to Brooklyn Squad 1, heard on his scanner of a plane crashing into the North Tower. FF Siller returned to his station to grab his gear and drove to the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, where he found the entrance closed for security reasons. With 60lbs of gear on his back FF Siller raced on foot through the tunnel to the World Trade Center.

FF Stephen Siller was one of 343 FDNY firefighters who died in the line of duty on 9/11. His story is one of bravery, determination and selflessness, and it is also the story that inspired the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, an organization that continues FF Siller's legacy by helping the families of fallen first responders and military veterans.
