As the 2026 Summer Work Experience Program (SWEP) comes to a close, we're celebrating a summer of learning, growth and opportunity.

Through SWEP: Emerging Leaders and SWEP: Explorations, participants who are blind or have low vision gained valuable work experience, explored career interests, built independence and developed skills that will support their future goals.

From workplace placements and community partnerships to lasting friendships and new experiences, this summer was filled with meaningful accomplishments. We are incredibly proud of each participant and grateful to the employers, mentors, families and community partners who helped make SWEP 2026 a success.

Congratulations to all of this year's participants. We can't wait to see what comes next.

A SWEP training all about building confidence and staying safe!

SWEP participants took part in hands-on safety training at OCB, learning practical ways to create personal space, respond to unwanted contact and advocate for themselves in everyday situations.

A big thank you to instructor Scott Wall, Program Administrator at Columbia Regional Inclusive Services, for leading this important session. Experiences like this help participants feel more prepared, independent and ready for what’s ahead.

July is Disability Pride Month, and July 26 is National Disability Independence Day 💛

Disability Pride Month recognizes the history, achievements and contributions of people with disabilities while raising awareness about the importance of accessibility and inclusion. As part of this celebration, we honor National Disability Independence Day on July 26, marking the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

For Oregonians who are blind or have low vision, that includes access to education, employment and the tools that support independence.

We’re proud to be part of that work every day.

SWEP Spotlight 🎉

Meet Em and Scottie, two of our Summer Work Experience Program (SWEP) Emerging Leaders!

Em is gaining hands-on experience at Starting Grounds coffee shop in the Multnomah County Courthouse, while Scottie is building valuable workplace skills at Trillium Creek Training and Rehabilitation Coalition, an equine therapy center.

We’re excited to follow their progress this summer and celebrate all they accomplish along the way.

Great moment for our team! 🎉 Cory, an Executive Support Specialist from the Oregon Commission for the Blind, got to meet Governor Tina Kotek in person at the recent Health and Human Services (HHS) Town Hall.

It's always meaningful when our staff have the chance to connect directly with state leadership and share what we do every day for Oregonians who are blind or have low vision.

This summer, our young adult SWEP participants are gaining real-world experience in workplaces across Oregon. This program helps Oregonian teenagers with vision loss learn crucial career skills.

From museums, libraries and retail settings to the Oregon Zoo, Portland Police Bureau, OHSU's Casey Eye Institute, Talking Books & Braille Library and more, participants in both SWEP: Explorations and SWEP Emerging: Leaders are building skills, growing their confidence and exploring future career opportunities.

We're proud of all they're learning and accomplishing as they take the next steps in their personal and professional journeys.

Celebrating achievement at OCB 🎉

On June 17, we celebrated Cahill and Cloud at the close of our Work Experience Program.

As an intern in OCB's Meal Prep program, Cahill worked closely with staff and students to support classes and help cater several successful OCB events. Their care, consistency and teamwork made a meaningful impact throughout the program.

Cloud earned a certificate in Unified English Braille and graduated from OCB's Orientation and Career Center program. A local artist, Cloud continues to share their creativity and talents throughout Portland's vibrant arts community.

We're so proud of everything Cahill and Cloud have accomplished and look forward to seeing what's next for them.

Deafblind Awareness Week runs from June 25 through July 1 and invites us to broaden our understanding of access, communication and independence.

People who are deafblind are part of a diverse community, with unique experiences and individualized ways of navigating work, daily life and connection. Effective support starts with recognizing that there is no single way to communicate, travel or engage in daily life.

At Oregon Commission for the Blind, services for individuals who are deafblind are shaped by each person’s goals and preferences, focusing on communication access and independent living.

This week is a reminder that inclusion isn’t just about awareness; it’s about designing systems, services and communities that truly work for everyone.
