Multnomah County Library Multnomah County Library's 19 neighborhood locations serve the city of Portland, OR, and beyond.

Multnomah County Library is the oldest public library west of the Mississippi, with a history that reaches back to 1864. Today, Central Library and 18 other libraries make up a system that offers more than two million books and other library materials. As Oregon's largest public library, Multnomah County Library serves nearly one-fifth of the state's population with a wide variety of programs and services.

Read for fun and prizes this summer! Youth of all ages can play the Summer Reading game by starting a daily reading habit. Children and teens can track their reading on paper or online from June 15 to August 15. Update for June 15: Due to the severe weather, cooling services are available at Albina Library, Central Library, East County Library and Midland Library until 8 pm today, Monday, June 15.

Please note: East County Library will be open from 6pm to 8pm as a cooling space only. Library services will not be available after 6 pm.

Libraries will not be able to provide emergency services. A complete list of resources and cool spaces is available on the County’s Help for When It’s Hot web page. Please check the hours and locations page for the latest information on hours and operations at the link in our comments.

As of June 11, 2026, the St. Johns temporary holds location is closing in order to move books, furniture and other materials out of the space. This time will also be to help staff prepare the grand opening of our beloved St. Johns Library. The last day the temporary holds location will be open to the public is June 10.

The community is invited to use alternate locations while the St. Johns hold pickup is closed and before St. Johns Library reopens:

North Portland Library: 512 N Killingsworth Street, Portland, OR 97217

Celebrate Juneteenth with us this weekend! 🤩 We are thrilled to invite you to a special Juneteenth storytime and snack in the morning and an exciting musical performance by Okaidja Afroso of Makola Performing Arts in the afternoon! Juneteenth (June 19) is a day to honor Black history, celebrate resilience, and enjoy the power of community.
