Surrounded by wooded hills, this pristine and picturesque town of about 4,500 residents is located in a green and gold valley. The Town values its environmental and historic heritage, its excellent public schools and its economical Town government supported by a multitude of dedicated volunteers. An extensive trail system, scenic roads, open space and natural views contribute to the Town's beauty

and charm. Commercial activity is encouraged to the extent that it primarily meets needs of residents of the community. These factors have enabled the town to retain a rural ambiance reminiscent of earlier days.

A note from Town Councilmember Helen Wolter on E-bike Safety.

I just received a report from the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office that five juveniles on e-bikes fled deputies near Robert's Market. Incidents like this are becoming more common across California, and e-bike safety continues to be one of the biggest issues local leaders are discussing.

As a parent, I understand why e-bikes are appealing. They offer kids independence and a convenient way to get around. But after learning more, I've become increasingly concerned about the number of illegal high-speed devices being ridden by youth.

Here are a few important facts:

⚠️ Emergency departments are seeing more serious injuries involving riders under 16.

🚴 Many devices being ridden by students don't actually meet California's legal definition of an e-bike. Some are legally considered mopeds or motorcycles, requiring registration and licensing.

👨‍👩‍👧 Parents can face legal consequences if their child is riding an illegal or unsafe device or operating it recklessly.

📖 California lawmakers are working on new legislation focused on:
Stronger enforcement
Better safety education
Clearer labeling
Improved crash data
Passenger safety

E-bikes can be a great transportation option when used responsibly, but it's important that parents understand the laws and help their children ride safely.

I expect additional statewide regulations to take effect by January 1, 2027, providing clearer rules and stronger safety measures.

Please take a few minutes to learn about the different classes of e-bikes and talk with your kids about riding safely.
