Sector Virginia came out to support Congressman Rob Wittman’s Service Academy Day!

Together, Sector Virginia’s own LT.j.g. Kennedy Starks, LT.j.g. Melanie Arroyave, and ENS Tarran Johnson with Academy admissions partners Mr. Dave Gamble and Ms. Jennifer Stacks recruited for the Coast Guard Academy and explored alternative pathways like the College Student Pre-Commissioning Initiative (CSPI) program. The team discussed the application process, lessons learned from past Academy Days, and what the Coast Guard is. 🛟🇺🇸

High 5️⃣ from D5️⃣! Congrats FN Fernandez from STA Portsmouth!

This week the D5 Family recognizes Fireman Diego Fernandez serving at Station Portsmouth.

His command reports that his “energy and charisma directly and positively influence his shipmates,” and that he is routinely “operating well above pay grade in completion of engineering tasks and other station projects.”

Above and beyond examples include repairing key equipment and troubleshooting complex mechanical issues while underway to keep the station boats running at their best. FN Fernandez has exceeded minimum underway hour requirements by logging nearly 200 certified hours on unit assets since becoming certified. Always the innovator, he is also actively working with his supervisors to prototype a new fuel cap system for one of the station’s boats.

Recently FN Fernandez initiated a station remodeling project. He replaced the communications room flooring at the station and has since moved on to tackling the training/recreation room flooring. Once complete, FN Fernandez has made it known that he plans to continue with the rest of the flooring throughout the station.

That is dedication at its finest.

BZ and a hearty to FN Fernandez!

Congratulations Master Chief!

Sector Virginia’s Incident Management Team is at it again, removing substantial environmental threats one federalized case at a time. Our Pollution Response team opened a federal project accessing funds from the Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund & recovered approximately 1000 gallons of oily water mixture for a semi-submerged vessel along the Yeocomico River to minimize the environmental threat.

Special shout out to our port partners: Virginia Marine Resource Commission, Departmental of Environmental Quality, and Northumberland County Fire Department.

Anyone witnessing an oil spill, chemical release, or maritime security incident should call the NRC hotline at 1-800-424-8802.

🎙️ The Best Lifejacket is the one you wear‼️

Today, SEC VA received a MAYDAY call out on VHF 16 from a mariner who was beset by weather. The mariner was underway by himself when a wave knocked him overboard. He treaded water with his life jacket on for about an hour before he was able to make a makeshift ladder out of line and reboard the vessel. Once on board he reached out to the CG with assistance from Virginia Beach to bring the operator & vessel to safety.

For further information on the importance of wearing a lifejacket visit https://uscgboating.org/recreational-boaters/life-jacket-wear-wearing-your-life-jacket.php

Just in‼️

Yesterday, a P/C fishing out at Norfolk Canyon suffered a VSL fire where they needed to abandon VSL. Two Good Samaritan VSLs responded to the distress and assisted in the rescue of 03 POB. The P/C “KillShot” and the P/C “Lorie V” assisted in the rescue and were able to get the 03 POB back to Rudee Inlet. Unfortunately, the VSL was unable to be recovered, but all lives were saved!!! Bravo Zulu to the “Killshot” and “Lorie V” for the maritime assistance!!!
