The Portsmouth Health District will be holding a community-based testing event Saturday, September 25, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Tidewater Community College (TCC)-Portsmouth Campus, 120 Campus Drive. This will be a free drive-thru event and those coming for testing must remain in their vehicles and wear a face covering. Please bring a valid identification to the testing site. Pre-registration is not required. “With the increased number of COVID cases in Portsmouth, the Portsmouth Health Department wants to ensure timely access to testing. We encourage anyone who may have come in contact with someone with COVID to
be tested,” said Dr. Parham Jaberi, acting health director for Portsmouth and Norfolk Health Departments.

ATTENTION . . . If you have business in a Portsmouth municipal facility, you are required to wear a mask or other face covering. This requirement is not new. The facial coverings/masks requirement in municipal buildings is the same as before, the only difference is that we will be requesting proof of vaccinations or masks will be required. The safety of our citizens is paramount, and we want to ensure we are exercising every option to enable safety in city buildings. Thank you for your attention. Take care of yourself and others. Mask up!

Center, 900 Elm Ave. Highlights of the annual event include information resources, giveaways, food, and activities.

The Coastal Virginia Chamber of Commerce held a salute to COVID Heroes reception September 9, at the Zeiders American Dream Theater in Virginia Beach. Pamela Little-Hill, director of the Portsmouth Department of Social Services (DSS) was among the dozen recipients. Little-Hill assumed the helm of leadership at the Portsmouth DSS in February 2016. She is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the department including child welfare systems, financial assistance programs, children’s and employment services. Congratulations for a job well done!

Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) has announced that the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has extended the federal mandate that requires passengers to wear a face mask on all modes of transit and in transit centers through January 18, 2022.

Per the HRT notice, persons must wear properly fitted masks over their mouth and nose. Face shields and goggles may be worn to supplement a mask, but a mask is required. Scarves, ski masks, balaclavas, bandanas, shirt or sweater collars pulled over the mouth, masks made of loosely woven fabric, masks containing slits, exhalation valves, or masks that do not fit properly are not permitted as substitutes. Passengers who do not comply with this order will be denied entry to HRT facilities and the use of HRT modes of transit.

Saturday, September 11, 2021, marks the 20-year anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon, and United Airlines Flight 93 which crashed in suburban Pennsylvania. By a joint resolution approved December 18, 2001, (Public Law 107-89) has designated September 11 of each year as Patriot Day which also directs the flags be lowered to half-staff for the entire day on September 11. Patriot Day serves as a remembrance of the lives lost on that September morning.

The High Street Ferry Dock for the HRT ferry will be closed during this event. Customers needing ferry service during this time frame will need to utilize the North Landing. See you there!

The Coast Guard is holding a joint change-of-homeport ceremony for the U.S. Coast Guard Cutters Escanaba, Spencer, and Seneca Wednesday, Sept. 8, at 10:30 a.m., Coast Guard Base Portsmouth. Portsmouth, an official Coast Guard City, welcomes the medium endurance cutters to the CG Portsmouth base.

The City of Portsmouth’s municipal offices, including libraries, museums, and recreation centers, will be closed Monday, September 6, in observance of the Labor Day Holiday. There will be no trash, recycling, or bulk collections Monday, September 6, and all Monday routes will be collected on Wednesday, September 8. For more information, call the Waste Management Division at 393-8663.

Can you explain why I have to wait a week for a replacement trash can after the trash truck broke it this morning? If I leave it on the curb until the city comes by to replace it, I can get a ticket. I can’t pull it back and put my trash in it because the wheel is broken - I wouldn’t be able to get it back to the curb. Thankfully the nice lady from the church across the street was kind enough to loan us one of the church’s cans. But still, why do I have to wait? Picture below so you can see the damage to my can

We’ve put our kids through enough, let the kids have their park!!
