BREAKING NEWS! Maine State Police Arrest New Hampshire Man in 1993 Homicide

📰 Maine State Police Arrest New Hampshire Man in 1993 Homicide 📰

On Thursday, June 4, 2026, members of Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit- South and the Portsmouth Police Department arrested 59-year-old Daniel Jolly of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, in connection with the 1993 homicide of 73-year-old Maxine Bitomski of Kittery.

At approximately 6:13 AM Jolly was arrested in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, on a warrant charging him with Murder. Jolly was transported to the Rockingham County jail. He will remain in New Hampshire pending extradition proceedings.

On January 16, 1993, at approximately 3:24 PM, officers from the Kittery Police Department responded to 3 Colonial Road in Kittery after Bitomski was found deceased inside her home by family members. The Kittery Police Department immediately began investigating the circumstances surrounding her death and notified the Maine State Police shortly thereafter. Detectives from both agencies continued working the case over the next three decades.

On January 17, 1993, an autopsy was conducted by the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta. The cause of death is not being released at this time pending the unsealing of court documents. The manner of death was determined to be homicide.

Investigators determined Jolly knew Bitomski through his employment with Medical Market, a medical supply company that was based in Portsmouth, New Hampshire that provided oxygen equipment and services to Bitomski prior to her death.

Beginning in 2021, the investigation was re-examined by Detectives assigned to Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit- South. Investigators continued pursuing leads, reviewing evidence, and utilizing advances in DNA testing that ultimately led to Jolly’s arrest.

“This arrest reflects the determination and commitment of investigators who never stopped working this case,” said Lt. Tom Pickering who oversees Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit- Unsolved. “The work completed by current and retired Maine State Police Detectives, members of the Maine State Police Crime Laboratory and the Kittery Police Department over the past 33 years was instrumental in bringing this case to this point.”

Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit- South was assisted by Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit- Unsolved, Maine State Police Crime Laboratory, Kittery Police Department, New Hampshire State Police Major Crimes Unit, and the Portsmouth Police Department. If anyone has information related to the death of Maxine Bitomski, please contact Major Crimes Unit Sgt. Justin Huntley at (207) 624.7076 (option 9)

The investigation remains ongoing.

NEVER FORGOTTEN:
35 years ago Stella N. Bolton, age 68, and James J. Moore, age 73, were found deceased in their home at 74 Rockhill Avenue in Portsmouth, NH. A fire was discovered at 1:30AM, and was initially believed to have taken their lives. A medical examiner later determined that they had been stabbed to death before the fire was set. The Attorney General’s office declared the deaths a double homicide.

Stella was born and raised in Trinidad, prior to moving to the United States. She was viewed as a grandmother by the neighborhood kids. And she loved to make cookies for, visit with, and give hugs to them.

Stella lived with her longtime roommate JJ. JJ was retired from Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, and a U.S. Navy Veteran of three wars. In his retirement, he liked to sit out on the front porch of their bungalow apartment, crack a beer, and relax. He was a car aficionado, and bought a new car almost every year.

Stella and JJ had a relationship built on respect and taking care of one another. They were both good natured souls, kind to others, and people loved them.

Their case remains unsolved today.

There are still people out there in our community, who were involved, and who know what happened. Please come forward. Nothing will bring back JJ and Stella, but we can help provide answers to their heart broken surviving family members. The loss of a loved one is traumatic enough, but even harder to let go of a loss when it is a murder that hasn’t been solved.

"The dead cannot cry out for justice. It is a duty of the living to do so for them."
-Lois McMaster Bujold

🚨SEACOAST CRIME STOPPERS PRESS RELEASE🚨
On February 10, 2026 Seacoast Crime Stoppers received a generous donation of $99,068.70 from its partnership with the Brook Casino, located in Seabrook, NH. The money was raised through charitable gaming and will help to continue supporting law enforcement and the surrounding communities. The Brook donates 35% of all gaming proceeds to New Hampshire charities.

Having originally started as the “Portsmouth Crime Line” in 1983, the non-profit organization was renamed Seacoast Crime Stoppers in 2003. It went from only serving Portsmouth, to currently serving 18 member communities located within New Hampshire and Maine.
Those communities are Portsmouth, Rye, New Castle, Newington, Greenland, Stratham, Durham, University of New Hampshire, Exeter, Newmarket, Newfields, Kensington, Barrington, Epping, Somersworth, Kittery ME, Eliot ME, and York ME.

Seacoast Crime Stoppers, Inc. was founded for the promotion of law and order, and better enforcement of existing laws by its law enforcement partners. Also, for assisting with the apprehension and conviction of criminals by making funds available for reward payouts which helped develop a community offensive against crime. The reward payouts are sometimes a motivating factor for the public to cooperate with police departments in the cities and towns mentioned above.

Seacoast Crime Stoppers has since expanded its purpose and mission aside from using funds for rewards and payouts, by also becoming passionately involved in crime-prevention and community outreach to try and make our communities safer. The organization has donated funds towards youth sports, community events, equipment and education for law enforcement, and has provided free child ID kits available to the public for a number of years.

The board members are all volunteers who not only donate their time for monthly meetings, but also towards volunteering at events such as National Night Out, Family Fun Day, Market Square Day, Children’s Day, touch a truck, Cops & Kids, Bike Rodeos, Neighborhood Watch Meetings, Safety Talks, and the Citizen Police Academies. All the while making sure that the McGruff the Crime Dog makes special appearances upon request.

With the generous donation from Brook Casino’s charitable gaming, Seacoast Crime Stoppers is able to continue helping make our communities a better and safer place.

Seacoast Crime Stoppers will also continue to offer $10,000.00 rewards for information leading to an indictment or arrest of a suspect (s) regarding the Unsolved Homicides of:
James J. Moore and Stella N. Bolton-February 1991
Terry Giles, Joseph Poulin, and Linda Plummer-October 1986
Tammy Little-October 1982
Maxine Bitomski-January 1993

Seacoast Crime Stoppers would like to thank The Brook Casino CEO Andre Carrier, and Charity Coordinator, Laurie Karas, for their generous donation and collaboration. The organization would like to also thank the communities for their continued support. And will keep the public updated on the usage of funds by making future public announcements.

If you would like to provide information about a crime, anonymous tips can be made by calling (603) 431-1199 or at www.seacoastcrimestoppers.com submit a tip. Rewards of up to $1,000 may be paid for help solving cases if the information leads to the arrest or indictment of a suspect.
