September is National Su***de Awareness and Prevention month.

If you or someone you know is losing the battle. Don't keep it a secret! Ask for help.

Remember to check on your shipmates and coworkers. We must make it our individual responsibility to become aware of the warning signs that are associated with suicidal behavior and bring it to the attention of someone who can help.

There are a number of resources available 24hours/day. Please call CG SUPRT at 855-CGSUPRT (247-8778) or the National Su***de Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK(8255).

9:11 remember USCGNortheast.mp4

We remember the women and men who bravely put others lives above their own on 9/11. We remember firefighters and local Coast Guardsmen who stepped up to evacuate and rescue people from the wreckage. We remember a community of people pulling together, regardless of status, organization, race or gender, for a common goal - humanity. 9/11 stands in history as a deep moment of loss, but also as a moment where communities chose to strengthen rather than break and build up again rather than crumble.

The story of the Coast Guard on September 11th may have begun in New York, where the day would see an ‘all hands on deck’ response of such magnitude that its impact has been felt for a generation, but that is certainly not where it would end.

The attacks that severe clear Tuesday morning would touch every aspect of the service - the ripple of its wake felt far and wide.

Thousands of miles away, in a Command Center in New Orleans, the young lieutenant junior grade in charge, Zeita Merchant, like many others in the Coast Guard and around the country, was attempting to wrap her head around the events she had just witnessed from afar.

Making sense of the unimaginable was hard enough that day, but she also had a job to do - ensure that a similar event wasn’t happening in her own back yard as well.

“The heaviness of Service to Nation for me as a junior officer had never been stronger than in those seconds I stood in awe watching the second plane hit the South Tower of the World Trade Center. Immediately, after realizing that our country was under attack, I had our watch team to jump into action. That day alone was not only a watershed moment for the Coast Guard but also for me and my commitment to a career of devoted service in uniform.”

In all of this, though, the idea of being and serving in New York never really crossed her mind.

Nearly twenty years to the day, though, not only is she in New York, the epicenter of arguably the greatest tragedy to befall our nation, but she leads the team at the tip of the spear - heir to the charge of upholding the legacy that many of those still here forged during 9/11; and doing so in a time where New York remains our country’s most consequential port in terms of both terror threats and driving the engines of commerce.

“We often say the work we do in safeguarding New York Harbor is a team sport, and there was no better example of this than when Coast Guard New York and our port partners led the largest maritime evacuation in history evacuating 500,000 New Yorkers from Manhattan. It’s twenty years later and that same unity of effort has only gotten stronger. We have the best in any business here in New York and I am humbly honored to serve with them.”

As she reflects on the twentieth anniversary, it is not lost on her that there are those who remain out there waiting for the right moment to do harm to the city and the nation she serves. But she and her team stand ready.

“While it is necessarily important that we pause, reflect and never forget, we must also move FORWARD. The threats we face today are not only real but constantly evolving to challenge our continued resolve and the Coast Guard as well as our partners are leaning forever forward to meet them.

Today we celebrate #LaborDay2021.

09/05/2021

Tomorrow, if you are in Cape May, you will hear a 22-gun salute from our firing battery just after morning colors in support of Su***de Prevention Month (SPM). This is a reminder of the average number of 22 veterans lost to su***de each day.

Starting next week, we will also have a Chapel Bells Tribute every Wednesday at noon as a sign of support and remeberence.

September is when we bring added attention to the complex issue of su***de and emphasize the available resources and support. This year the SPM theme, “Connect to Protect: Support is Within Reach,” highlights the important role connections with family, friends, the community, and resources can play in preventing su***de, especially in these unique and challenging times. Research indicates connectedness is a protective factor against some of the risk factors for su***de, such as loneliness or feeling like a burden.

As we move forward in remembrance and engagement throughout September, we ask you to continue to support each other and thank you for your support, engagement and leadership in taking care of yourself, each other, and your families.

Coast Guardsman of the Year 2021 helped save the lives of two hikers

Congratulations to AST1 Salt, this shipmate embodies devotion to duty and deserves the honor of Coast Guardsman of the Year 2021!

According to his Coast Guard supervisor, two hikers would have almost certainly died had they not received help from then-Aviation Survival Technician 2 Trevor Salt.
