HEART, HEROES, AND HISTORY: Portsmouth Fire Department Honors Its Own at 2025 Annual Banquet
PORTSMOUTH — In a tradition that has warmed the community since at least 1965, the Portsmouth Fire Department gathered this past Valentine’s Day to celebrate a year of service, sacrifice, and the "biggest heart in the county."
Chief Michael Leinen opened the evening by acknowledging the true backbone of the department: the families. "I’d like to thank everyone’s better half for letting them respond," Leinen said. "The calls come at the wrong time and take a while... this meal isn't just for the firefighters, but for the families putting up with it."
A Year in Review & Bragging Rights
The department saw a busy year with 55 total calls—21 fires and 34 rescue missions. Statistics showed that April remains the most demanding month for the crew. 8 calls that month while they avg 4 per month While the department prides itself on speed, this year’s "bragging rights" goes to the Chief himself. In a department where most members are clocking in under 45 seconds to get their gear on, Chief Michael Leinen took the top spot with a blistering 37.02 seconds, proving he can still lead the charge from the front.
Chief Leinen recalled a day with 70mph winds when multiple fires broke out in neighboring towns; he arrived at the station only to find four firefighters had already prepped the trucks just incase they were needed to help or have their own fire, with more pulling in behind him. "That’s a department that is ready to act," he noted.
Passing the Torch
The evening marked a significant leadership change as Marv Leinen stepped down after eight years as Assistant Chief, with Chad Reinig stepping into the role. The department also bid a formal "happy retirement" to long-time veterans Craig Rau (30 years), Jeff Schmidt (29 years), and Rick Ohlinger (15 years).
Chief Leinen issued a standing invitation to all retirees: "You are always welcome to come down the second Monday of the month at 7:00. We hope we’ve made you proud."
