Albacore Park

Albacore Park Come visit! Built at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, the U.S.S. ALBACORE served with the United States Navy from 1953 to 1972. ALBACORE never fired a weapon.

A National Historic Landmark site in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, featuring a maritime museum, gift shop, memorial garden, and tours through the USS Albacore (AGSS-569). ALBACORE never went to war. With the motto "Praenuntius Futuri" (Forerunner of the Future), ALBACORE's mission was experimental: to be designed and redesigned, adapted and readapted, her structural modifications ultimately developin

g into a prototype submarine. ALBACORE's teardrop hull design was a triumph, making her the world's fastest submarine at that time. It became a model for contemporary submarines for many countries. Used for testing control systems, dive breaks, sonar systems, escape mechanisms and all manner of innovative theories, ALBACORE was truly a laboratory afloat. Today Albacore Park includes a Visitor's Center. Books and submarine gifts are sold at the Visitor's Center. Adjacent is the Memorial Garden, a tribute to all of the crews and officers who have been lost in the Submarine Service. Rest rooms and ample parking are provided. Albacore Park is conveniently located one-quarter mile from Exit 7 on I-95. Audio tour on board.

Special welcome and Thank you to the Lt. Cdr. Robert Porter Family ⚓We appreciate their generous donation of the USS Sea Leopard plank which we proudly display in the Ship's Store.

Lt. Cdr. Porter commissioned the USS Dolphin and he decommissioned the USS Sea Leopard during his time in the Navy. After his passing, his family reached out to Albacore looking for a home for his cherished collection of Naval artifacts. We were happy to add many to Albacore's exhibits and displays which you can also see when you visit Albacore Park.

On May 23, 1939, the USS Squalus went down off the Isles of Shoals. After a catastrophic failure during a test dive, the sub came to rest at the bottom of the ocean.

According to Harold Preble, civilian architect aboard "we struck bottom, we knew it was only a matter of time before a rescue would come if we were once located."

Thirty-three men were spared from that fateful dive. The first thirty-three ever to be saved by the Diving Bell. Twenty-six of the crew are on Eternal Patrol.

On May 13, 2000, the USS Albacore was recognized as a Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark by ASME International.

According to the ASME, Albacore inaugurated a radical change in submarine design. Her unique hull design along with HY-80 high strength steel made her the perfect candidate for this accomplishment.
