Human Services are essential services that need to also be flexible and responsive to the needs.

We've been opening at 6 AM to ensure our clients don't have to wait in the frigid temps after leaving night shelter.

Responsive. Flexible. Serving.

When amazing things happen...

One of our team members had been trying to get a client's MCaid card so we could arrange access to health care. She's been working on it for a few days.

Today a representative from the insurance provider walks in the door looking for the client!!! Speechless... #TeamPVH 💜💙

#TeamPVH, we've been together for abt 4 years and you've showed up faithfully to serve.

This season, we've been doing this for 415 consecutive days!

Consecutive days of providing a safer place for our brothers and sisters to lay their heads and sleep indoors.

Consecutive days of service, responding to the concerns about "what am I going to eat tonight?"

Consecutive days of caring and compassion, coaching and cheering, helping to lift ppl back to their purpose.

Thank you seems inadequate considering we surely could not do this without each of your hearts and hands.

We are grateful you choose us as a means to serve your assignments! Love and respect!!!

Lastly, a very special and thankful shout out to Sheriff Michael Moore and his team at Portsmouth Sheriff's Office because without your support we would've have no where to serve. Thank you!

Whatever your interpretation for this symbol, we chose peace, giving, birthing, grace, love, kindness, miracle and service...

We are so humbled to be entrusted with this incredible and worthy assignment. #ShelterChristmas2020

Dec. 24th was a long and busy day-into-night!

Thanks to everyone on our team who helped us give our guests a little touch of family for Christmas Eve.

Thanks for all the donations, hoodies, flannel shirts, socks, blessing bags and did I say socks! 🧦🧦🧦

Then it was lights out like Santa was coming. I got the honor of spending Christmas Eve with our extended family. #ShelterChristmas2020

In tradition and homage, we would have gathered this evening to pay tribute to the lives of our homeless brothers or sisters who've died since last December.

Friends, family, Portsmouth, Virginia City Officials, Portsmouth Police Department, and Portsmouth Sheriff's Office, Homelessness Providers and community would come together at the opening of Oasis Social Ministry to say their names, night a candle and ring a bell.

We lost 3 brothers, citizens, gentle men from our community since December...❤❤❤

Tonight we celebrate their lives in the quietness of our own special ways to say...your life mattered!

The regional providers of the Hampton Roads area each contributed their tributes in this video. If you have a chance, please watch it and celebrate their lives because they mattered.

As we remain in COVID-19 pandemic conditions across the Nation, it is abundantly clear that we must explore different ways to continue to meet the needs of our brothers and sisters
experiencing homelessness.

With the assistance of the Sheriff @Micheal Moore, the Portsmouth Sheriff's Office, new and current Host Churches, some City of Portsmouth Elected Officials, our dedicated volunteer and paid staff and you, the community, we have been able to provide sheltering for 373 consecutive days! This is notable because we manage the night shelter and usually provide these services from mid-November to May.

As we continue our services, we have identified "a new way forward" that permits us to continue to "preserve and serve" -- to preserve valuable relationships and their opportunities to serve individuals experiencing homelessness.

We have created a "contactless" avenue of support for our Host Churches and others seeking to help.

Please contact us to learn more if you're interested in assisting!

~~United by our compassion, we help our most vulnerable neighbors break the cycles of homelessness to reclaim their dignity~~

💙💜PVH Shelter Team Zoom Meeting💙💜

Most of us are "zoomed" out yet this dedicated grp of individuals gathered together for 2-hrs this morning to be on one accord for our new shelter operations and protocols!*

There's so much I can say abt this amazing grp of individuals, from their giving abt 2000 hrs of service over a 6-month period of regular shelter to the fact they show up whenever and wherever!

Thank you all so much for being #TeamPVH!
If you're interested in training and committed to becoming a PVH Volunteer Shelter Lead, please call our office to discuss.

Lifting Hearts. Lifting Lives.

We have a mission at Portsmouth Volunteers for the Homeless and many see it as sheltering and operating a day service center; however, those of us who are truly “sold out” for the mission see it as a lot more…we see it as helping to build confidence, restore faith and rekindle hope.

When a person thinks they are worthy of more, they behave as if they deserve better than their current circumstances…and since we know that our thoughts are the seeds of our actions, when we inspire and rekindle hope, we have the ability to change behavior and changed behavior can change lives.
