Homes are the cure to homelessness

This is a well written account of "the homeless experience." While the backdrop is NYC, it's also the same here in our community just scaled to a different level.

"over the course of my career as a doctor, the most powerful medication I’ve ever seen is an apartment. After someone moves into an apartment off the streets, within a few weeks, their health conditions improve, they look better, voices they may be hearing in their head quiet down, addiction improves and recovery begins."

"As we emerge from COVID, we must think boldly about our social infrastructure. Instead of growing our institutional economy of prisons and hospitals, we need to create a caring economy of community-based services. New York City needs to be prepared with shovel-ready projects to eliminate homelessness through expansions in supportive housing."

Walking into my quiet, darkened apartment in Midtown after work, the noise and tumult of the day starts to fade; my breathing slows down; and I can feel my cortisol level, a stress hormone, dropping. Across the city, 50,000 other men, women and children living in a public shelter or on the street ca...

Leroy, the missing homeless man from Norfolk, is alive — and no longer homeless

#ChangingTheParadigmOfOurPerceptionsAbtHomelessness

"He explained his reluctance to accept handouts: His needs were simple and he had his pride.

“But I appreciated the people who seemed to genuinely care,” he said. “I really did.”

His final words about the outpouring of concern from so many strangers:

“It was good that people came together. There’s a lot of division in this country right now. Maybe everyone will go on and help someone else who needs it now.”

Concern poured out from the community when Leroy Dublin, a fixture in Ghent, vanished.

As the greater society seeks to create a "new normal," we remain acutely aware of the continuing unmet needs of our citizens who are experiencing homelessness.

We are grateful to those who have been caring and supportive of our efforts and we ask you to remember, we are still in the battle to combat homelessness.

We remain thankful to Sheriff Michael Moore and his team for their continued support! Without this support, we would not be able to shelter our clients.

Continuing to serve...and praying our new normal is next level! #FixedShelterPortsmouthVA

Child Tax Credit Payments to Begin in July: Help Clients Prepare Now

Starting July 15, the IRS will provide Child Tax Credit payments to families with children. Families will receive $300 for each child under the age of 6, and $250 for each child age 6-17. Payments will be made on the 15th of each month through the end of 2021. Congress will consider extending assistance beyond 2021.

Families who have filed their 2020 tax return will receive payments automatically. A process will be established for families to provide updated information (e.g. change of mailing address) and for non-filers to access the payments.

The IRS is encouraging families to establish bank accounts so payments can be sent via direct deposit. Those without bank accounts will receive a paper check or debit card. More detailed information from Treasury and the IRS is expected soon.

Many may know that for the past 4 years Pastor @Joseph Fleming has celebrated his Pastoral Anniversary and Birthday with a week-long Noon Day Worship Service, an Anniversary Concert and a FB fundraiser.

With COVID-19, Pastor Joseph remained determined to continue his tradition. This year he was sidelined by an unexpected motor vehicle accident, yet he continued his advocacy for PVH from this recovery station.

We are so thankful for Pastor Joseph's heart, his servant leadership. Thank you so very much for your consistently spearheading opportunities for Third Baptist Church Portsmouth Va and the community-at-large to help #TeamPVH meet the needs of our brothers and sisters experiencing homelessness.

We are humbled and grateful. Thank you! #TeamPVH #LifingHeartsLiftingLives

Shout out to Portsmouth Police Department Officer "You Know Who You Are!"

A few months ago, we had a client with a substance abuse emergency visit Maryview Emergency Department.

For no particular reason, the client was approached by an Officer who was there on other business. The Officer began talking with the client, he says "like a human being."

She talked to him about life, decisions and future. She gave him her Police Department business card and asked him to call if he found himself in a space where he needed to talk...

A few days ago, Officer "You Know Who You Are," called the client to check on him, to see how things were going.

Needless to say, the client is impressed, overwhelmed and feels valued.

When you're led by your spirit, God magnifies the small things...

Thank you Officer "You Know Who You Are!" #TeamPVH #LiftingHeartsLiftingLives #InvisibleInPlainSight #PortsmouthVaStrong

Najee Harris Hosts Draft Party at His Old Homeless Shelter

We've said many times, ppl aren't disposable. We never know a person's "after homelessness" potential.

"Harris went on to be one of Alabama's most explosive players, rushing for 1,224 yards and averaging 5.9 yards a carry as a junior in 2019."

The Steelers No. 24 overall draft pick threw a draft party for kids at the homeless shelter where he lived for several years.

Lifting Hearts. Lifting Lives.

We have a mission at Portsmouth Volunteers for the Homeless and many see it as sheltering and operating a day service center; however, those of us who are truly “sold out” for the mission see it as a lot more…we see it as helping to build confidence, restore faith and rekindle hope.

When a person thinks they are worthy of more, they behave as if they deserve better than their current circumstances…and since we know that our thoughts are the seeds of our actions, when we inspire and rekindle hope, we have the ability to change behavior and changed behavior can change lives.
