Why is Veterans Day celebrated on November 11th? The armistice was signed on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. Veterans Day originated as “Armistice Day” on Nov. 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of WWI. Congress in 1926 passed a resolution for an annual observance and beginning in 1938, Nov. 11 became a national holiday.
