Beware of Brushing Scam!

A recent scam has been showing up in many states. A "brushing" scam is when someone receives an unexpected gift or item not ordered in the mail from a place like Amazon or other company. Examples of gifts include, rings, bracelets, necklaces, Bluetooth speaker, etc. The gift will have the recipient’s address, but not include the sender's information or be from a known retailer. When the recipient opens the package to see what it is and possibly who sent it, there is a QR code to scan to find out who sent the gift.

Once the code is scanned, all the information from that phone will be sent to scammers. They receive all access to the phone. All personal and financial information is accessible to the scammers and often the victim's bank accounts are drained.

The gift can be kept or thrown away, but the QR code should NOT be scanned for any reason. QR code scams are nothing new. These scams show up in all places, including parking meters.

Inform your family members about the scam and avoid scanning any unknown QR codes included in the package.

We have recieved word of a scam call targeting our local 874 numbers. The caller asks for personal information including Medicare number to, “Setup next year’s prescriptions”

Follow up with Medicare confirmed that there are no such calls being conducted and that Medicare would not ask for this type of information over the phone.

Be advised, this time of year we usually see an uptick in these types of scams.

Be vigilant and warn those you can.

Attention!!!!

We have reports of someone going around town in a red truck offering to do cheap driveway work. We have not vetted this person. If anyone comes to your door to sell something in our town, they must be able to present you with a card from town hall per our ordinance. Please spread the word.

We have been made aware of a recent scam that deserves your attention. The report indicated that the caller claimed to be with Duke Energy and warned of a payment mistake. The caller then asked for a payment to be made to correct the issue. The call came from number (806)491-4251.

Be aware that the caller did not sound foreign and was rather convincing. However, this is not a Duke number and the person on the other line was not a representative trying to correct any real issue.

Stay vigilant and warn those you can.

Poseyville Police Department 7th Annual Toy Drive!

This year we were able to purchase gifts for 121 children right here in our North Posey community. This is made possible by the generous donations of those who continuously share in the love of Christmas! We are so blessed to have this support and look forward to this each year. Thank you to everyone who donated!!!
As always, special thanks to the Poseyville Police Department Ladies’ Auxiliary (aka Kelsey Carter) for taking the time to wrap each gift with love.

If you would like to be a part by making a donation, please contact Marshal Carter or ask at Town Hall.

Merry Christmas to all!
