September is National Preparedness Month (aka Emergency Management Christmas!), and there’s no better time to make sure a few basics are covered before you actually need them.

Take a few minutes this week to check these four things:

✅ Make sure you’re signed up for SPURS alerts so you can receive important local emergency notifications. 👉🏼https://r.i-info.com/Garza/Notice

🔦 Check flashlights and batteries. Replace dead batteries now, not when the power is already out and you’re digging through a junk drawer in the dark.

🥫 Check your emergency food and water. Rotate anything expired and make sure you have enough essentials on hand for your household.

💊 Know where important medications and documents are. Keep critical information somewhere you can access quickly if you need to leave home.

Preparedness doesn’t have to mean building a bunker and buying 14 years of canned beans. Small steps now can make a big difference during an emergency.

Throughout September, Garza County Emergency Management will be sharing more simple ways to help you and your family stay prepared.

We have a fun and busy week ahead, filled with Homecoming traditions, school spirit, and BOLD GOLD pride!

We are still in need of clothing items, sheets, and other materials to wrap the letters! If you can donate, please bring items to the High School by tomorrow so we can have everything ready for Wednesday night. If you still need a meal ticket for the band pulled pork dinner, those are $12 per person and can be purchased from any band member or the band director.

Let’s pack the stands, support our students, and make this a Homecoming to remember! GO BOLD GOLD!! 🖤💛

Over the past week, 156 wildfires have burned 94,067 acres statewide. Texas A&M Forest Service and all assigned resources have responded to 89 of those wildfires for 93,615 acres.

Rain chances are ending today as a weak cold front moves out of Texas. This weekend, drier conditions return, with breezy winds of 15-20 mph expected across portions of the High Plains on Saturday.

🔥 Initial attack potential will remain moderate in East Texas due to ongoing dryness and dry surface fuels. However, the lack of a significant fire weather trigger should help keep resistance to control low to moderate.

Looking ahead, above-normal temperatures and dry weather are expected to increase wildfire activity across the state next week. Fuels are expected to dry quickly, and elevated to significant fire potential could develop as early as Sunday and persist through next week, especially across the Rolling Plains, Cross Timbers, and Eastern Hill Country.

Stay aware of local conditions and use caution with activities that could spark a wildfire.

🔥 HAZE & SMOKE IN THE AREA 🔥

Residents may notice increased haze and the smell of smoke across Garza County today, particularly around Lake Alan Henry and surrounding areas.

The smoke is associated with the Ross Fire currently burning in Palo Pinto and Jack counties. Changing winds are carrying smoke westward into portions of the South Plains.

At this time, the haze and smoke being observed locally does not indicate a wildfire at Lake Alan Henry or within Garza County.

Visibility may be reduced at times, and individuals who are sensitive to smoke may want to limit prolonged outdoor activity if conditions become bothersome.

Garza County Emergency Management will continue to monitor conditions and share updates if anything changes.

Please do not be alarmed if you see or smell smoke in the area today.
