Northeast Iowa RC&D has worked for decades with farmers, soil scientists, and communities across Northeast Iowa to develop farming strategies, field practices, and agricultural markets that can make farming better for our waterways, soil health, and farmers’ bottom lines. Natural Resource Projects Director, Ross Evelsizer, was recently on Morning Edition to discuss how the innovative practice of relay intercropping generates revenue, protects soil, and reduces flooding.
This effort is an exciting partnership with the American Flood Coalition, the Iowa Flood Center, IIHR - Hydroscience and Engineering, Iowa State University, and the Iowa Soybean Association.
Extreme rainfall and flooding are becoming more common across much of the U.S. In Iowa, some farmers are experimenting with something called relay intercropping to keep more rainfall in the fields.
