Today, the Poteau Police Department pauses to honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation. Memorial Day is more than the start of summer or a day off work. It is a solemn reminder that freedom has been secured by generations of heroes who never made it home.

We remember the fallen. We honor their courage. And we stand alongside the families who carry both the pride and the weight of that sacrifice every single day.

May we never take for granted the liberties we enjoy because of those who gave everything in defense of them.

From all of us at the Poteau Police Department, we wish everyone a safe and meaningful Memorial Day. 🇺🇸

The Poteau Police Department stands in solidarity with the men and women of the Fort Smith Police Department during this difficult time following a line of duty injury within their agency.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured officer, his family, and the entire department as they navigate the days ahead. Violence is never the answer. In moments where darkness tries to take hold, we must answer it with light, unity, and unwavering support for one another.

From one badge to another, know that Poteau stands with Fort Smith.

The advice in this 1937 graphic still applies today—and it’s just as important now as it was then!

This hand-drawn safety message was created by Oklahoma Highway Patrol Patrolman Carl Johnston, who was assigned to Logan County. It was included in a brochure that was shared with thousands of Oklahomans during a time when traffic safety was becoming a growing concern across the state.

In 1936 alone, a year before the Department of Public Safety was created, Oklahoma saw 685 lives lost and more than 2,000 people injured in traffic collisions. Newspapers at the time described it as “carnage on the highways.” As vehicles became more common and roadways improved, traffic increased—and so did the need for greater public safety awareness. At the same time, many Oklahomans lived in rural areas where local law enforcement coverage was limited.

In response, the state legislature created the Department of Public Safety to help reduce roadway fatalities. When the first troopers hit the road, traffic safety was their priority, and officers like Patrolman Johnston worked hard to share that message with the public.

Nearly 90 years later, that mission continues. While vehicles and roads have changed, the goal remains the same—helping everyone get home safely.

And let's all take a moment to appreciate the incredible detail and care in Patrolman Johnston's handwritten piece of history!

This week, Jody Thompson and our Patrol Lieutenant Brandon Richie are participating in valuable position-related training focused on strengthening leadership, enhancing operational effectiveness, and continuing to build the skills needed to better serve our community.

Training opportunities like these are critical in modern law enforcement. They provide updated knowledge, sharpen decision-making abilities, and reinforce best practices that directly impact officer safety, professionalism, and public service. Every class attended is another tool added to the toolbox… and in this profession, a well-stocked toolbox matters.

Our agency remains committed to continuous improvement, professional development, and ensuring our officers are equipped with the training and resources necessary to provide the highest level of service to the citizens we proudly serve.

Thank you OMAG

During National Police Week, we honor the men and women behind the badge who stand the line between order and chaos, often at great personal cost.
We remember the fallen, support the families they left behind, and recognize the quiet courage carried by officers who continue to serve their communities every day.
Their sacrifice is etched not only into memorial walls, but into the safety of the lives they protected. 🇺🇸💙

Members of the Poteau Police Department were honored to participate in the Unity Law Enforcement Bike Ride leading to the 58th Annual Oklahoma Law Enforcement Memorial Service held at the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety Memorial.

Lieutenant Brandon Richie, Sergeant Josh Fout, Officer Laura Luna and Officer Cory Scott represented the department during the ride, joining law enforcement officers from across the state in honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

The Unity Ride is more than just a bike ride. It represents remembrance, sacrifice and the commitment to never forget the officers who gave their lives protecting their communities. Events like these serve as a powerful reminder that the badge is bigger than any one department, city or agency, it is a family that stands together.

We are proud of our officers for taking part in such a meaningful event and representing the Poteau Police Department with professionalism, pride and respect.

While most folks are watching the skies from the porch, the men and women of the Poteau Police Department are watching it from every angle; radios on, apps open, and one eye always on the clouds.

A friendly reminder: staying weather-aware isn’t just for storm chasers. Keep those alerts turned on, check your apps, and don’t let the forecast sneak up on you like a bad plot twist.

We’ll be out here doing our part, keeping an eye on things and staying vigilant. You do the same. A little awareness goes a long way, and together we’ll ride out whatever Oklahoma decides to throw our way. 🌩️🚔
