Windwalker Ridge Mustang Sanctuary

Windwalker Ridge Mustang Sanctuary Our mission is to provide sanctuary for displaced mustangs with a focus to keep families together

06/01/2026

It was a busy day around here as we picked up several loads of hay for the horses. Hay day is typically an all day event and we usually dedicate a day specifically for it every week. When we say they eat like a horse, we literally mean it. We currently have 86 resident horses here at the sanctuary, which means a lot of mouths to feed every week. This is why it is so important for us to have the love and support and generosity from so many people to help us make this possible.

This is what rescue looks like. We spend day in and day out taking care of all of the residents of the sanctuary. This labor of love and the tasks that it includes takes on many different shapes and sizes. Our lives literally revolve around the horses.

We want to thank each and every one of you who help us make this opportunity and this sanctuary life possible for so many horses in need. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for the financial support and moral support that you give us because it truly takes all of it and all of us. Some days are harder than others, and there are some days that we feel like we have the weight of the world on our shoulders, but then we are reminded by the horses that they are worth every ounce of energy and resources that we put into them and we are reminded by our supporters that we are not in this alone. Those reminders keep us motivated to keep going and to keep fighting because they need all of us in order to change so many lives and make this opportunity possible for so many in need.

Here is the list of our resident mustangs who have not been 100% supported or their feed bills covered for the month of May. Today is the last day of the month to meet our goal of $100 for each horse. It is costing approximately $113 just for hay and grain alone each and every month for each and every horse.

Unfortunately because donations are at an all time low right now and we can’t seem to meet our goal to cover the bills consistently every month, our intake and rescue program is on hold until further notice. This is why we need everyone to pitch in and help if possible in order for us to be able to keep going and do what we love to do and were meant to do….. save lives! This operation truly does take a village!

Please donate and help if you can. We need to get this lost done and covered today if possible. We are calling on our angel donors to help us make that possible. We over half of our herd is covered but we still have several together and we need you today!

Be sure to let us know which horse you want your donation to be applied to support. If you don’t tell us which horse then we will choose who has the biggest need. We are hopeful that by breaking this down you all can see the true cost and needs that we have. We will put a ✅ next to the horse once we reach the goal for that horse. If there isn’t a checkmark then that horse isn’t covered for the month yet and that means the hay/grain bill isn’t covered.

Famous Amos is enjoying the company of his buddies while filling his belly full of hay! This big old fella has grown accustomed to the laid back quiet life and is thoroughly enjoying his retirement!

We rescued Amos from a Texas kill pen back in December for Giving Tuesday. We was an old broke down and used up Amish horse who likely spent all of his life pulling heavy equipment and was seen as nothing more than a tool rather than a sentient being with feelings.

That all changed the moment he scrolled across my Facebook feed with an sos post from the kill pen. His image was engrained in my head from that moment on. Days passed and I kept checking back to see if he had been saved and thought surely he would be. He had such a soft and kind eye and someone would be so lucky to give him a soft landing.

The morning the truck was due to arrive to ship him over the border to the slaughter plant I checked again and sure enough he was still on there and hadn’t been saved. At that point I knew his rescue was up to me. I felt called to help him. Something inside of me saw something inside of him. It was just a quiet nagging that taking me back to him.

Since he has arrived here at the sanctuary he has settled in, put on some much needed weight, and made some friends who he enjoys spending his days with. He is not super social with people and in fact can be a stinker to catch unless of course I have a cookie bag. He associates people with work. We are trying to change that mindset and help him understand that his working days are over and from here on out it’s nothing but love and cookies!

After all of his years of service for humans just to be tossed away into a kill pen bound for a Mexican slaughterhouse doesn’t really say a whole lot for mankind or humanity. In fact it makes me wonder how so many people can support that and condone that. I will never be able to understand.

Amos is living his best life yet! He has everything he could ever want or need. His retired life was made possible by all of you who supported our efforts to help this big beautiful boy and give him the soft landing that he worked so hard for and deserved.

He may not be a mustang but he is just as deserving! These drafts are gentle giants and we have a soft spot for them. We like to call him our mustang by association!

Big ole Brutus was quite suspicious of us when we went to feed and check the herd this evening. We must have caught him off guard as he lifted his head and stood on high alert looking at us from all angles trying to figure out what we were and what we were doing.

After lifting and shaking his head at us as a warning he went back to grazing and foraging through the meadow before crossing the creek and trotting off to find himself some better cover from us. He was definitely being camera shy and didn’t waste any time exiting the situation.

Some of these mustangs are just more wild than others and any human presence makes them feel pressured and uncomfortable. We try to limit that as much as possible with these more shy and elusive horses who just want to exist in the background. We always try to follow their wishes by reading their body language and cues. They always have so much to say in so many unspoken ways.

Brutus is such a big beautiful boy. He is an older gelding from South Steens Oregon.

Ok guys here are the beautiful souls that we still need help covering bills on for the month of May. We are at the end of the month and are feeling the crunch time to get our hay bill paid for May. There are still quite a few horses here that haven’t received a single donation. Many of you have been so incredibly generous and have helped us make sure the others are covered and for that we are deeply humbled and incredibly grateful and we can’t thank you enough! But we haven’t met our goal yet for the month so we are still trying to get there and are asking for your help.

It’s a big hay weekend for us here at the sanctuary. We have four loads of hay being delivered this weekend. That’s 44 bales. This weekend’s hay bill will total an additional $3520 on top of what we still owe for the month for the hay that we have already gotten. If you can help us with any of it we would be extremely grateful. We will continue these fundraisers monthly for each horse until we meet our goals ensure the hay and grain bills are paid for our resident mustangs.

Here is a breakdown of what it currently costs us every month to feed our herd. Right now our monthly hay bill is about $8600. Our monthly grain bill is $1200. We currently have 86 horses in our care. That’s $113 per horse just for hay and grain each month. We are going to list every resident horse here at the sanctuary below. We have already removed the horses from our list below who are covered for the month of May. Our goal will be to raise $100 for each horse. You can donate any and every amount you want to help us reach $100 for every horse. It all adds up to make a difference and is deeply appreciated and very much needed!

We will see if we can meet this goal together as a village. Until we can meet these goals consistently each month to ensure everyone here is taken care of then we are at a standstill on further rescue cases sadly.

We made it to the end of the week and to another round of ! Check out how gorgeous our herd is grazing down in the valley meadow! That’s Little Thunder from Sand Wash Basin in the front with several of our White Mountain boys including Denali, Greystone, and Phantom next to Devil’s Garden Maverick back there.

Here is the list of horses whose hay and grain is not yet covered for the month of May. Some of them have partial donations. Applied to them as you can see from the list below. The month of May is almost over with only a couple days left to get these horses bills covered for the month and we really need your help to make that possible with time running out.

A couple of weeks ago we announced that sadly, we are having to put any intakes and rescue cases on hold for the time being until our monthly feed bills are covered, and we can consistently meet our monthly fundraising goals for these critical expenses for the horses who already call the sanctuary home. We have commitments in place to a few other horses. Their intakes have been pending for several months now and a couple have been waiting to come home to the sanctuary for well over a year and will be arriving here soon. But other than those cases, we unfortunately cannot accept anymore until further notice.

We hope that you all can see and feel and understand the urgency for us to be able to keep everyone happy and healthy and fed, and that you will help us meet our monthly fundraising goals to cover the hay and grain bills for the deserving horses who call the sanctuary home so that we can reopen our doors and have enough resources to be able to continue to help more horses in need in the near future.

Good morning and happy Friday from our newest arrivals Casino and Royale!

These boys are settling in nicely here at the sanctuary and are adapting quickly to the sights and sounds and routines of the life and goings on around here. They also quickly discovered that cookies are a good thing and they get excited when they hear the crinkling of a treat bag coming their way.

We plan to turn them out into the pasture either this weekend or early next week to give them more room to roam and run and discover more of their new surroundings. Now that the herd has been pushed down the hill and is residing on the backside of the property, these boys will also eventually make their way down the hill to join the rest of the herd. We want to give them enough time to learn the boundaries and ensure that they respect the fencing before we release them out onto the bigger part of the property with the rest of the herd.

In the meantime, these two boys are sticking close together and are buddied up tightly, which is what we expected and why we try to rescue in pairs. They definitely feel safer together and lean on each other for moral support as they go through all of these changes and transition period as they rediscover themselves and start living their next best lives!

We are almost at the end of the May and we have well over half of our resident mustangs covered on hay and grain for the month! We have an outstanding hay bill of $3600 for this month that we need to finish paying so we are once again posting the list of our residents who still need support for the month. When’s it’s feeding time everyone comes down from the hills and mustangs start pouring out of the woods from every direction. We were back in one of the valleys by the spring setting our new salt blocks for the mustangs when they heard us and everyone came to investigate what we were doing.

They are such curious creatures of habit and are keenly aware of our presence and what we are doing at all times so it’s no surprise where they hear the tractor they come to check out the situation. Of course they were excited for the new mineral blocks. They are one of their absolute favorites along with the molasses protein tubs and of course bags of cookies.

Moki’s crew was the first to approach and always the first in line when it comes to anything to do with food. Everyone else knows that Moki is in charge and top dog of the herd and they respect that and keep a distance that Moki approves of.

We have such a big beautiful herd and they are all so deserving of this sanctuary life. Each and every one of them has their own individual personality and are special in their own way. We love them all to pieces and we love sharing their lives and their stories with you!

05/26/2026

So often we get asked if the mustang go up into the woods and use that part of the property and the answer is yes they absolutely do!

You should see the paths that these horses have created all throughout the wooded areas. It’s like their own personal highway through the woods!

Horses are creatures of habit and they most definitely are lazy and will take the path of least resistance and the shortest route possible every time to get to where they want to go and if that means going through the woods you better bet on it that they absolutely will. Taking a stroll through the woods is nothing for them compared to some of the terrain and territory they used to cover on the ranges.

They love there cover. It’s a welcome change from what they are used to and the vastness on the ranges with no natural shelter for miles in many of the HMAs. The mustangs use the trees as natural shelters from the rain, snow, and wind block. They absolutely love to lounge and relax under the big canopy of shade in the summer time while the cool breeze blows through the tree tops and gives them some relief from the scorching hot summer sun.

In this video you can see some of our Sand Wash Basin mustangs including Lexi, Honeyspice, Believe, and Sheridan making their way up through the woods as they head towards the spring for a drink.
