The Village of Potsdam, in partnership with AmVets Post 282, is proud to remember America’s heroes with the annual Memorial Day parade and ceremony, set for Monday, May 25.
The parade line-up for participating organizations will take place from 8:30 to 9:15 a.m.
This year’s event will open with a special flag-raising event at Pine Street Arena/Sandstoner Park, to be held at 9:15 a.m. This year, the Village would like to honor the memory and legacy of Steven J. Riggs, a Potsdam native who gave his life in the Vietnam War. The American Heroes Flagpole Foundation donated and dedicated a flagpole in Mr. Riggs’ memory at Pine Street Arena last fall. Potsdam will hold a brief flag-raising ceremony with the playing of taps to begin the day. All parade participants and members of the public are welcome.
Following the flag-raising, the parade will kick off, using an alternate route this year. The Village is incorporating a different route to incorporate the flag-raising and avoid downtown construction.
The Memorial Day parade will depart from Pine Street Arena/Sandstoner Park, and head down Pine Street across the Sandstone Drive/Rt. 11 intersection to Maple Street. The parade will then continue down Maple Street, over Fall Island, and into Ives Park.
The Memorial Day ceremony will immediately follow the parade, in its traditional location at the war memorial in Ives Park. The keynote speaker this year is Abrahm DiMarco, former chair of military science at Clarkson University and an Army veteran. The Potsdam High School marching band will once again lead the ceremony music and take part in the parade, alongside first responders, youth groups and local civic organizations.
NOTE: In case of inclement weather, the village would cancel the parade but still hold the ceremony in Ives Park, under the pavilion instead. If the forecast is poor, the village will make an announcement by 8 a.m. on Monday morning.
All are welcome to join, reflect and remember. For more information, or to register a group to take part in the parade, contact [email protected].
