March is Women's History Month!

Women's History Month is when we take a moment and reflect on how far women have come, where they are headed and their accomplishments along the way.

Notable women in the policing field include the following:

"-Alice Stebbins Wells (1910): The first American-born woman to hold the title of police officer with arrest powers, hired by the LAPD.

-Marie Owens (1891): Often recognized as the first female police officer in the US, employed by the Chicago Police Department.

-Georgia Ann Robinson (1916): The first African American female police officer, serving with the LAPD.

-Isabella Goodwin (1912): New York City's first female detective, famously working undercover.

-Emma Daugherty Banister (1918): Considered the first female sheriff in Texas and likely the United States.

Leadership & Modern Firsts:

-Penny Harrington (1985): Became the first woman to lead a major U.S. city police department (Portland, Oregon).

-Beverly J. Harvard (1994): The first African American female police chief of a major city (Atlanta).

-Heather Fong (2004): The first woman to lead the San Francisco Police Department.

-Cathy Lanier (2007): The first female Chief of Police for the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Police Department.

-Keechant Sewell (2021): The first female police commissioner in New York City history.

International & Specialized Trailblazers:

-Kiran Bedi (1972): The first female officer in the Indian Police Service (IPS).

-Dr. Frances McGill (1940s): Served as an honorary surgeon and forensic expert for the RCMP, pioneering forensic pathology in policing.

-Felicia Shpritzer & Gertrude Schimmel (1965): NYPD officers who fought for promotion rights, becoming the department's first female sergeants.

These women were instrumental in paving the way for the nearly 100,000 female officers currently serving in law enforcement."
