Welcome to the latest edition of โFocusing on Our Local Communities,โ where we interview, on a bipartisan basis, a key local leader in one of the 102 municipalities that I represent in Carbon, Schuylkill, and southern Luzerne counties.
This week, we focus on Orwigsburg Borough Councilman Ed Keyworth. A Republican and 1983 graduate of Blue Mountain High School, Keyworth continued his education at thePennsylvania College of Technology, earning a degree in retail management.
After starting his career with Dunn & Bradstreet in Denver, Colorado, he returned home to join his familyโs businessโ Pottsville Provision Company, a wholesale retail food distribution company that has served the region since the 1940s. Keyworth purchased the business from his parents in 1987 and has proudly served as its owner and operator ever since.
Keyworthโs deep commitment to the Orwigsburg community is what inspired him to run for borough council five years ago.
โI have been involved in the Orwigsburg community since I was 16 when I joined the fire department and the ambulance association. I just love our community and our county,โ said Keyworth. โThe richest asset we have is our people. We have generous people and people that care, and I wanted to get involved just to make sure that Orwigsburg stays Orwigsburg. Itโs really a gem of a town.โ
Community service has always been a priority for Keyworth. He is a past member of Friendship Hose Fire Fire Co. and the Orwigsburg Ambulance, and he currently serves on several boards, including SEDCO, PADCO, Lehigh Valley Hospital Pottsville, the Orwigsburg Lions Club, the Veterans Memorial Building Task Force, and Schuylkill EMS, where he is board secretary.
During his five years on council, Keyworth and his colleagues have accomplished numerous key projects throughout the borough.
โThereโs a lot of good things going on and a lot of that is thanks to public private partnerships. I want to thank Senator Argall, Representative Barton and Congressman Meuser for all of their support. I also want to thank our borough office workers, maintenance workers, and police officers for all that they do,โ said Keyworth. โMoving borough hall to 333 South Liberty Street has been great for the town. Itโs more accessible for our residents and itโs a nice building. Weโve totally updated and revamped our police department building. Thatโs an impressive facility. A streetscape project is currently underway in the center of town and we just opened a new playground on Ridge Road. I also really enjoy working with the other council members. Itโs a very good council and weโre all there for the right reasonsโ
