Service Access and Management, Inc. (SAM) Helping people improve their lives, every day. SAM isn't some huge conglomerate that does a bit of Case Management or Supports Coordination on the side.

Human Services are what we do and we do them well. SAM began as a tiny 15-person team of individuals dedicated to improving human services in Pennsylvania. Now, 20 years later, that team has grown to nearly 600 individuals serving more than 14,000 Pennsylvania residents. We have thousands of satisfied consumers whose lives are enriched thanks to the hard work of our staff. We are proud of our empl

oyees. Their dedication to the people they help each day are the main reason that SAM succeeds. It is easy to be proud of our programs. It is another case entirely to justify that pride with outside accreditation. Our case management and crisis intervention services are reviewed and accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF). SAM goes far beyond the annual state licensing standards and conforms to rigorous international standards of best practices for our programming. SAM has been expanding its service area since 1997 when we moved beyond the boundaries of Berks County in south central Pennsylvania to neighboring Schuylkill County. Since then, we provide services across the state of Pennsylvania and New Jersey and to more than 10,000 consumers.

🏳️‍🌈WELCOME TO JUNE! 🏳️‍🌈
There is a lot to care about in June! From the start of summer to Men's Mental Health Month and Pride Month, June offers opportunities to reflect on the many ways we support well-being in our communities. This week, we're focusing on Pride Month and the important role affirming care plays in promoting positive outcomes for LGBTQ+ individuals.

Affirming care goes beyond good intentions. It involves creating environments where individuals feel respected, valued, and safe to be themselves. Research consistently shows that affirming interactions can improve engagement in services, strengthen therapeutic relationships, and support better mental health outcomes.

As helping professionals, small actions can have a meaningful impact:
• Use a person's chosen name and pronouns.
• Avoid assumptions about relationships, identities, or experiences.
• Recognize the effects of minority stress and discrimination on mental health.
• Create welcoming and inclusive spaces through language, policies, and practice.
• Approach conversations with curiosity, openness, and respect.

Affirming care is not about having all the answers. It is about being willing to listen, learn, and meet people where they are. Cultural humility reminds us that growth is an ongoing process, and every interaction is an opportunity to build trust and connection.

The Mental Health Service Line continues to provide support to community First Responders through the facilitation of the Hearing Voices Simulation experience.

The team partnered with Lebanon County to support several First Responders, including Sheriffs, Probation Officers, and Police Officers, with this impactful training designed to strengthen empathy and understanding when responding to individuals experiencing mental health challenges.

A special thank you to Rebekka Matthews, Melissa Shingle, Amanda Lorditch, Nicole Lorenzetti, and Cat Billet for helping support this important partnership and continued community collaboration.
