🚰 What does a garden hose have to do with your drinking water? 🌱

More than you might think!

August 16 is National Backflow Prevention Day, a great time to talk about something that quietly plays a BIG role in protecting our water supply.

Imagine a garden hose sitting in a bucket of fertilizer, pesticide, or other chemicals. Normally, that water stays right where it belongs. But if there's a sudden drop in water pressure, like during a water main break or when firefighters are using nearby hydrants, the flow of water can reverse.

That's called backflow, and without proper protection, contaminated water could potentially be pulled back into the drinking water system. Your drinking water system.

Backflow prevention assemblies help stop that from happening.

They're especially important for properties with:

💦Irrigation systems
🔥 Fire sprinkler systems
❎Other connections that could potentially introduce contaminants into the water supply

At Kitsap Public Utility District (KPUD), properties with potential cross-connections are required to have the appropriate backflow prevention assembly installed and tested annually.

Want to learn more about the water you drink?

KPUD's annual Consumer Confidence Reports (CCRs) are updated on our website on July 1st every year. These reports provide detailed information about the quality of your drinking water, including where it comes from, what it contains, and how it meets state and federal safety standards.

Because KPUD operates multiple water systems, each report is specific to the water system serving your home. We encourage you to locate and review the Consumer Confidence Report for your water system to learn more about the water delivered to your tap.

👀 What's That White Paint in Your Yard? 👀

Have you ever noticed white or colored paint, flags, or stakes along the edge of your property or near the road?

When a call is placed to 8-1-1, utility locators may use temporary markings to show the location of underground utilities or identify an area where excavation is planned.

The Uniform Color Code provides a standardized way to identify different types of underground utilities. This helps homeowners, contractors and utility workers understand what may be underground.

Here's what the colors mean:

⚪ White = Proposed excavation area
🔵 Blue = Water
🟠 Orange = Communications, including fiber
🔴 Red = Electric
🟡 Yellow = Gas
🟢 Green = Sewer

So, what does white paint mean?

White markings typically indicate an area where excavation is planned. It does not necessarily mean there is a utility buried there. The markings could be related to a planned construction project, utility work, a survey, or even something as simple as installing a "For Sale" sign.

Please don't remove them. They may be associated with planned work by a utility, contractor, or a neighboring property.
