Veteran of the day is Florence Lake, Army Nurse Corps, WWII. Thank you for your service to our great nation in its time of need Florence. Rest in peace sister.

Florence Lake was born December 9, 1903 in Lucas Township to Mr. and Mrs. William D. Lake. Nicknamed "Puddles" because she was too little to be a lake, she stood just 4 foot 11. She attended school in rural Dieterich and graduated high school in 1922.

After high school she received a three-year nursing degree from Silver Cross School of Nursing in Joliet, Illinois. She did private duty at Silver Cross Hospital and later transferred to Passavant Hospital, Chicago, Illinois. From there she joined the Army with a group of doctors and nurses from that hospital.

Florence entered the Army Nurse Corps with the Northwestern Unit (12th General Hospital) in February 1942. The following Fall she initially went to Africa. After the invasion of Italy, she was assigned to that country and served in Naples, Rome, and Leghorn. She was part of setting up a 2000 bed hospital outside of Rome in June of 1944. Just 5 days after they began the move from Naples to Rome, they received their first 300 patients.

After V-J Day she was with the 41st hospital train which transported German prisoner-of-war patients back to the Austrian border. Florence rose to the rank of Captain. Capt. Lake returned to the States after 34 months overseas.

Florence Lake died on June 28, 1993 and is buried at Oakridge Cemetery in Effingham, Illinois. She was proud to have served her country.

Rest in Peace, Florence . . . You are not forgotten. See less
