Busy day dealing with a large brush fire on the western end of Powhatan yesterday. In all, crews work 7+ hours to contain just over 35 acres that burned.

We cannot thank all the mutual aid crews enough for your assistance. It was awesome to see all the outside help that came from Cumberland, Amelia, Department of Forestry, Powhatan Sheriff’s Department and then flying Squad.

Shout out to the Powhatan Sheriff’s Department drone team. This was such a valuable asset on this incident. The command post was a long way from the actual fire. The eye in the sky helped the command staff with seeing how big the fire was, where the wind was pushing it, watching for spots fires (many of them), tracking apparatus and people, and helping the boots on the ground get to where they were needed.

Outstanding work by all!

Last night got a bit busy for the county. Company 2 responded to several tree down calls and two houses with trees on them. Fortunately, everyone in both locations was uninjured.
Unfortunately, both houses have a fair amount of structural damage that will need to be repaired. Check around your property for downed trees and limbs. Also, look up and make sure there are no broken limbs just waiting to fall. Be cautious as you drive around this morning, as there are still some roads closed due to power lines and trees being down.

Stay off the ice.

Today a few members from the Powhatan County Fire Rescue Water Reacue team hit the water ice again. Two members were from Huguenot, one from the Powhatan Rescue Squad and one career member.

We worked on various victim removals, self rescue, hauling systems. Using various down and dirty quick techniques. Why, because the victim depends on it. We are dressed in layers, a dry suit and PFD. The victim does not and they may only have seconds to minutes before they may give up.

Another successful day in cold water.

We want to start off with do not go out on the ice. The first ice thickness is unpredictable. Also, the ice you will notice is very white in color which means it is not very strong. As we were training, you could hear and see stress fractures occurring.

Tonight the Powhatan County Fire and Rescue Water Rescue Team did some ice rescue training. Six members from Huguenot attended this valuable training opportunity.

We do not often get opportunities to do ice rescue training and we did not want to miss out. We worked on various methods of getting victims out of the water. Everyone who attended ended up in the water. They had to self rescue themselves then they had to rescue someone else that was in the water.

It was a great training session. A lot was learned and we are all more prepared if the day ever comes to have to preform rescues of this type.

We want to thank everyone who helped make this happen this evening and those who took time away from there loved ones to attend.

Sad news out of Henrico County.

Yes, ponds are freezing over but it is not strong enough to support much weight. The ice is not the same thickness throughout. One step might be ok, then the next, you may go through the ice.

Do not go out on the ice to retrieve your pet. If a person or a pet goes through the ice, call 911 quickly to get the correct resources on the way.

Do not go out on the ice to rescue them. Use something to reach them, after you call 911. Examples of things you can use to reach someone: Ladder, pole, rope and toss them a life jacket if you have one. Stay off the ice!

Keeping you update on service available.

Be safe

In anticipation of this weekend’s winter weather system, Powhatan is planning to make several locations available to the public as warming centers and device charging stations during day-time hours. Residents may bring service animals, but not pets.

01/23/2026

Winter weather is soon to be here. How much of what is anyone’s guess. We will attempt to keep our page updated on incidents, road closures and anything we feel is helpful to the public.

Remember if you’re operating a generator, they produce carbon monoxide. Operate them as far from your house as possible as it is still possible for carbon monoxide to get in your house. Be cautious, a carbon monoxide detector is a good idea.

When was the last time you changed the batteries in your smoke detector? If it has been a more than 6-12 months, a fresh battery would be a good idea (unless it is one of the 10 year battery style). So when/if your power goes out it still works.

If you have to go out in the snow, drive with caution. If you have to pass anyone working along the roadway give them space to work, move over and if you can’t, slow down. We want to meet you, but not by being hit by you.

If you see the power companies folks out there working in the cold. Give them a wave and a cheer as it will likely be a few miserable days/weeks for them. They will be working as fast as they can to get your lights back on.

Try to enjoy the weekend and be safe!!

Huguenot goes mutual aid to assist Amelia County on a MVA with entrapment (1/19/26).

At 2:24 PM Rescue 702, DC721, DC720 along with some in their personal car responded to 11400 Block of Genito Road in Amelia. They arrived to find a three vehicle MVA with significant damage to two vehicles with someone entrapped in both. Powhatan was assigned to manage a pickup truck. DC720 and DC721 quickly evaluated what needed to be done. They communicated with Rescue 702’s crew and all went to work. Under 15 minutes the doors and B post were removed and the occupant was on their way to the stretcher. The occupant moved to Powhatan Medic 721 for transport. Amelia had units available to transport but M721 had the easiest access to clear the scene and shortest distance to the hospital. Which for the occupant to the hospital quicker.

Powhatan’s crew was next assigned to assist Amelia on extricating the occupant of a full size SUV. This vehicle was on its side with the roof against the guard rails. This was a much longer operation, in the end the occupant was safely removed and transferred to Medflight.
