Powhatan County Fire and Rescue

Powhatan County Fire and Rescue Serving People. Saving Lives. Serving the Community The Department is comprised of six companies strategically located throughout the County.

The Powhatan County Fire and Rescue Department is an integral part of the public safety system in Powhatan County. Each of the six companies (Company 1 – Powhatan Volunteer Fire Department; Company 2 – Huguenot Volunteer Fire Department; Company 3 – Macon District Volunteer Fire Department; Company 4 – Fine Creek Volunteer Fire Department; Company 5 – Deep Creek Volunteer Fire Department; and the

Powhatan Volunteer Rescue Squad) has its own leadership team and is completely staffed by volunteers. As a primarily volunteer system, we are always accepting new members who have a desire and compassion to serve others. There are several positions available to provide services to the community: Firefighting, Emergency Medical Services, and Auxiliary membership. The training is free and available for each position. There are positions available for people aged 12 and up. Our younger volunteers (12 – 15 years old) are introduced to public safety through the Junior Emergency Technicians (JET) program. (Check out their page at www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100011466933319). Members 16 – 18 years old have the opportunity to serve in a station as a junior firefighter. Once members are age 18 or older, they become full members and can be designated as firefighters. The duties of firefighter can include:
• Helping protect the public in emergency situations.
• Responding to a wide variety of calls, such as car crashes, chemical spills, flooding, water rescue and general rescue as well as fires.
• Providing first aid until the arrival of ambulance personnel
• using new technology firefighting and rescue equipment
• Promoting fire safety via talks, advice and training sessions
• Demonstrating the use of firefighting equipment/extinguishers
• Performing practice drills
• Working with police and ambulance service personnel
• Undertaking physical and academic training
• Checking and maintaining vehicles and equipment
The work can be stressful but there is a great deal of job satisfaction to be gained from providing such a valuable service to the community. For those who have more of an interest in providing first aid or advanced medical care, the Powhatan Volunteer Rescue Squad serves the community by responding to incidents on the transport unit and concentrating on medical treatment and transportation of the sick and injured. Duties can include:
• Responding to calls of general illness, vehicle accidents, or trauma
• Working with the firefighters and police
• Providing basic or advanced medical care
• Providing cardio-pulmonary resuscitation
• Transporting the sick and injured to local hospitals
• Utilizing modern medical equipment
• Training designed to provide the most recent technologies
• Stand-by at large events, such as the County fair
• Checking and maintaining vehicles and equipment
Again, the work can be stressful but there is a great deal of job satisfaction to be gained from providing such a valuable service to the community. For those who wish to serve “behind the scenes” positions are available in the Auxiliary program. These dedicated individuals provide services to the companies by providing:
• Food and drink at incidents
• Assistance to the companies for fund raising
• Assisting the company with special events
• Assisting with general maintenance and upkeep of buildings and equipment

Powhatan County is a joint partner of the Goochland County Fire-Rescue Water Rescue Team, allowing us to cooperatively investigate this vehicle into the James River overnight. Thankfully the vehicle was unoccupied, so team members assisted the tow company removing it from the water. Personnel operated for approximately two hours.

Chief David Johnston had the privilege of presenting newly-promoted Master Firefighter Tyler Cochran with his new helmet shield this morning. Tyler started as a 15-year-old member of Powhatan Jet (Junior Emergency Technician), followed by joining the Huguenot Volunteer Fire Department while in high school. Immediately after high school graduation, he landed a full time job in the fire service in the Shenandoah Valley. Tyler has been full time with Powhatan for almost four years, and was worked diligently to obtain his Master Firefighter promotion. He's a trusted mentor to our newly-hired members, and we look forward to his continued service to our citizens and visitors.

We want to thank everyone who was able to attend the ceremonial ribbon-cutting for Powhatan Volunteer Fire Department Company 1's newly expanded firehouse! This well-attended event allowed former and current members of the department, as well as members of the public, to tour our new facility. The addition and renovation included private bunks that allow for the health and safety of the members, a new meeting room with improved technology, an expanded office area, an upgraded kitchen, and three new full bathrooms. We extend our thanks to the Board of Supervisors and Powhatan County Facilities who made this entire project possible!

Our thanks to Kenneth Clouser for his photography!

A reminder that the Virginia opening burning law is still in effect until April 30, meaning that open-air fires are only allowed between 4pm and midnight. HOWEVER, we are currently strongly discouraging ALL outdoor burning until central Virginia receives substantial, soaking rains. The current drought conditions will allow fires to spread rapidly, and we'd like to keep our beautiful county fire-free!

On Saturday, April 11, Powhatan Public Safety Communications Department received notifications of a brush fire in the western end of Powhatan County. While units were still enroute, it was clear by the volume of smoke this was going to be a larger-than-normal incident, so additional fire companies were added.

The fire was determined to be near the 5900 block of Anderson Highway, it is believe that the fire had been burning for about two hours prior to the fire department being notified. Based on the size and the spread, several additional requests for assistance from within Powhatan as well as Amelia and Cumberland were made, bringing nearly 50 firefighters to the scene. Units operated for about 8 hours total.

A unified command was established with the Powhatan Sheriff's Office and the Virginia Department of Forestry. PSO's drone team provided highly valuable real-time aerial views of the scene to help make timely strategic and tactical decisions and keep our personnel safe and nearby properties protected. The DOF provided two dozers and several experts in forestry firefighting.

We wish to thank several agencies for the successful outcome of this incident:
Powhatan Volunteer Fire Department Company 1
Huguenot Volunteer Fire Department
Macon Dist Vol Fire Dept - Co 3
Powhatan Volunteer Fire Department Company 4 (Fine Creek)
Deep Creek Volunteer Fire Department
Powhatan County Professional Fire Fighters - Local 5188
Cumberland Volunteer Fire Department
Cartersville Vol. Fire Dept
Randolph District Volunteer Fire Department Company 4
Jetersville Volunteer Fire Department - ACVFD Company 3
Amelia Vol Fire CO4- Mattoax
Paineville Volunteer Fire Department
Metro Richmond Flying Squad
Virginia Department of Forestry
Powhatan Sheriff's Office

A special all-call was made for all available personnel to respond to back-fill the firehouses, allowing two fire engines, one tanker, and four EMS vehicles to remained staffed and handle other calls for service.

It was determined that the blaze burned approximately 34 acres total. No injuries were reported to civilians or firefighters, and the cause remains under investigations by the Powhatan Fire Marshal's Office.
