I want to thank everyone that supported me in this race, although I fell short of victory I've made good friends along the way. Although I didn't win a seat on the board I plan to still attend the NRD meetings and will continue to bring awareness to the community. If anyone wants to attend, the meeting scheduled can be found on the Lower Platte North NRD website. If you'd like to get more involved or talk about what you could do to support your community in the future please reach out. I will post updates on this page about the activities of the board moving forward.

Don't forget to go out and vote today, the polling locations are open from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m.

There are many important races and several amendments to our state constitution this year so please make sure your vote counts. The only wasted vote is the one that isn't cast.

I'm also asking you to vote for me Scott Bush for Lower Platte North NRD. I hope everyone has a great election day!

With election day coming up I wanted to make another post about the Lower Platte North NRD and my reasons for running for a position on the board. My main concern is what the tax money we provide is being spent on. I believe the NRD should be focusing on flood reduction, water quality, and maintaining the recreation areas. I don't believe in spending money to provide the finest in luxury accommodations to the manager and board. Another thing I'd like to see more of is cost share programs that benefit agricultural producers and the surrounding communities by moving to more efficient irrigation and fertilizing practices. I'm also interested in improvements to the recreation areas at Czechland and Wanahoo. Since starting this campaign the comments I've received from everyone has made it clear the people want the maintenance of the Rec areas to be a priority. The last point is my personal desire to serve my community and be the voice of the taxpayers on this board.

Please consider voting for me Scott Bush in the upcoming election and help me stop the poor management currently plaguing this NRD!

I threw in a few sunset pictures for everyone's enjoyment!

I want to take a moment to introduce myself. My name is Scott Bush. I live in Prague, Nebraska, and I'm running for a seat on the Lower Platte North NRD. I have a son, daughter, and two stepchildren. For 25 years, I've been a Heating, Air, and Refrigeration Technician; I have run my own business for over 10 years.

I am running for this seat to bring commonsense leadership and protect the Nebraska taxpayer from wasteful spending. With new flood reduction projects getting underway and more scheduled to start in the future, the taxpayers of the LPN NRD can't afford any more mismanagement of the money entrusted to the NRD Board. With the approval of a $4.7 million building project earlier this year and the project committee not obtaining the easements for the flood project currently starting, this Board will be hard pressed to finish these projects within their budgets.

At the most recent meeting this October, the board approved taking $100,000 from the Recreation Fund to buy furniture for the new building. They also approved using Federal funds to cover a backup generator and outbuilding for this same project. Since the furniture, generator, and outbuilding funds are being provided by funds other than the $4.7 million dollar building fund, they are not included in the total cost of the building. The $300,000 they spent on design fees are also not included in the total costs. With this new information, I estimate we are around $5.25 to $5.50 million in cost for this building project that does nothing to improve services or amenities to the public. So, if any of you get a chance to stop by this new, Publicly Funded Palace to see what your tax money can provide, be sure to check out their second floor balcony that overlooks Wanahoo Lake.

This year voters in the LPN NRD district have a choice! It's time to start electing representatives who will ensure the taxpayers are put first and their interests are prioritized above the personal interests of the Board members. I will be that representative, if elected, and would ask for your vote.

Did an interview with Chris Walz today, it's only 5 minutes but we were able to cover several issues affecting the Lower Platte North NRD. I'd appreciate your vote on November 5th.

I am running for Lower Platte North NRD to stop the uncontrolled spending and mismanagement currently happening in the LPN NRD. I was at the last meeting and no surprise the building came up. They voted to approve a backup generator and storage building, the price tag was around $150,000 for both. They then discussed how they were getting this money from a separate FEMA fund so it's not really like Nebraska taxpayer money. Wait a minute! So FEMA doesn't have any money to help hurricane victims but they have funds available for this NRD building? They also implied that since the money is coming from a separate fund(not the building fund) it doesn't count as cost for the building. Does that make any sense? I'm pretty sure whatever you spend to complete the project is the total cost of the project.

It gets better! After that they then proceeded to approve taking $100,000 out of the recreation account to pay for furnishing the new building(the recreation fund is the money they make on camping, and park permits. This money should be used to improve the recreation facilities). They used the argument that since the building was on lake property it qualifies for the recreation fund. They could have put in a fish cleaning station, more camper spots, shelters, or something that actually benefits the public but they decided they needed nice furnishings more than we need improved recreation facilities. This money is also not being counted into the total cost of the building. So they just added $250,000 to the total cost of the project.

A vote for me will put one more strong voice on this board. I would never support taking money from other funds for this building project, nor would I support the deceitful practices currently being used to pull the wool over the eyes of the taxpayers.

I would appreciate your vote for Lower Platte North NRD. Help me stop this irresponsible management of our resources.

Here's an article from Flatwater Free Press it highlights the nitrate problems we're having with the ground water in Nebraska. This is another reason I'm running for the Lower Platte North NRD. I can't stress how important clean drinking water is for the citizens of our state. Water is the source of life for all living creatures and we must protect it.

The NRD is responsible for testing and identifying high nitrate areas. Once an elevated nitrate level is verified they begin working with the agricultural producers in that area to start reducing those levels. Please read the article (it's not very long) and consider voting for me in November so we can ensure Nebraska has drinkable water for the next generation.

Our Dirty Water
Quick Hit: Nebraska’s water is laced with nitrate. It’s likely harming our kids
Recent studies have found that areas with elevated nitrate levels also have elevated levels of lymphoma, leukemia and brain cancers in children.

What happened
The water many Nebraskans drink, shower with and take for granted is high in nitrate. And, after decades of inaction, the problem is growing worse. The statewide median nitrate level in our groundwater has doubled since 1978.

Fifty-nine different community water supplies have violated the EPA’s safe drinking water limit on nitrate in the past dozen years. Many residents, as well as rural Nebraskans who drink from largely unregulated private wells, may be unknowingly drinking and bathing in water that is dangerously high in nitrate.

The problem, experts say, stems chiefly from Nebraska’s biggest cash crop, corn, and the nitrogen fertilizer we apply to it to make it thrive. Runoff from feedlots and the fertilizer we apply on golf courses and lawns also leach nitrate into our water supply, though in much smaller amounts.

Despite the evidence that Nebraska’s nitrate problem is growing and spreading through regions of the state, state and local governments have never fined or stopped someone who is using excessive amounts of nitrogen fertilizer, NRD leaders say.

Nebraska wells

State and local governments test Nebraska wells — identified by the gray dots on the map below — in part because we have long known water quality is a problem.

The 6000-some red dots are wells that, when last tested, had a higher nitrate level than the EPA drinking water standard.
