🗑️ ATTN PRAIRIE VILLAGE RESIDENTS: Your trash bill could be changing.

The city's 10-year contract with Republic Services ends December 31, and the Prairie Village City Council will vote Monday night on how to handle what comes next.

Three options are on the table, including renewing with Republic, putting the contract out to bid or joining a regional trash pickup cooperative.

The Post wants to hear from readers about their experiences with Republic. Do they pick up reliably? Handle special pickups well? Any frustrations?

And what matters most to you in a trash contract — keeping costs down, recycling options, yard waste pickup, bulky item service or something else?

Drop your thoughts in the comments. 👇

We may reach out to you for further comments for our upcoming reporting.

I have received a lot of emails and comments regarding this today. Tonight was supposed to be public participation at our monthly Planning Commission meeting regarding this specific project. However, we were just informed of some changes being made to the application, which will now push public participation to the next meeting (most likely). I will keep you posted as things solidify. One thing is for sure, a lot of you feel very strongly about this issue and as this specifically is located in Ward 4, I'll stay on top of it to keep you as informed as possible.

The old Paul Henson YMCA in Prairie Village has been vacant for more than a year. Now a developer wants to put 20 luxury homes on the site, with price tags that could top $1 million each. 🏠

City staff have flagged some concerns about the specs and have asked the planning commission to delay a final recommendation.

The planning commission meets TONIGHT at 6 p.m. at City Hall and the public can weigh in.

What do YOU think should happen with the old YMCA site? Should it become a new high-end neighborhood, or did the city miss an opportunity to build something the whole community could use?

Happy Earth Day! Are you doing anything to celebrate our planet today!? Personally, I am excited for my annual tradition of walking the neighborhood and picking up trash on the streets/sidewalks with my daughter.

I also decided to finally sign up and start composting using our city's composting bins. Registration was very easy and I hope to be a pro composter like my grandma was soon enough!

Head to https://kccancompost.com/pvsmartcans to register today! Happy Earth Day!

Last evening I was able to attend STEAM Night at Tomahawk Elementary which serves many Prairie Village Ward 2 & 4 residents. I was excited to see some PV Environmental Committee volunteers spreading some joy with the kids (and locally grown honey!).

Thanks to all of you in the community that serve on a city committee and your service to others. It’s greatly appreciated!

I want to thank the Prairie Village Police Department for reposting this information again on Monday. I had asked them if they'd be willing to share some tips about the Coyote sightings we've had in our area. I've had several of you reach out regarding this, so please review the information they provided below and lets keep our pets safe!

You'd think after running a campaign I'd have this tech stuff figured out. Here's some updates from the council (light) and please feel free to sign up for semi-monthly updates moving forward. This one is light on decisions and heavier on upcoming events. Happy Thursday. - Nathan

One of the most meaningful ways to get involved in Prairie Village is by serving on a City committee. Our committees bring residents directly into the decision-making process on issues like public safety, infrastructure, parks, finance, and long-term planning. Folks, you could really make our city even better in so many ways by joining a committee this year. The time commitment varies, but most are all quite friendly to your schedule and you can help make a difference in the community. Think about it and let me know if you have any questions about a specific committee!

Are you looking to be more involved in our community? Maybe you want to be more actively engaged in local government but don't know where to start.

Consider volunteering for a city committee! Committee volunteers are vital to the success of our community, and we're seeking applicants now to fill these roles.
