Press Release: Commercial Structure Fire
On Friday, January 30th, 2026, at approximately 5:23 pm, the Prairie du Sac Fire Department, along with automatic aid from the Sauk City Fire Department, Merrimac Fire Department and Sauk Prairie Ambulance were dispatched to 875 17th Street in the Village of Prairie du Sac, for a report of smoke coming from the building.
Upon arrival, it was confirmed that an approximately 10,000 square foot waste transfer facility had an active fire inside the building. It was confirmed from first arriving law enforcement that there were no occupants in the structure. Fire crews determined with on-site employees that the building was filled approximately 40% with a mix of garbage collection, recycling & dumpster collection materials along with a front end loader.
Crews set up a defensive fire attack through a partially open garage door & several walk in service doors around the structure. Due to the size of the structure, the fire load & the temperatures, Fire Command requested MABAS Wisconsin (Mutual Aid Box Alarm System) Box 13-3-1 to the Box Alarm level for additional resources. Command later upgraded the Box Alarm to the 2nd Alarm level for further additional resources. An excavator was brought in to assist crews with building access, ventilation and moving of the materials inside the structure to complete the extinguishment. Crews remained on scene until approximately 12:00 pm, Saturday, January 31st. In total there were approximately 107 Fire, EMS, Law Enforcement, Public Works & assisting personnel for this incident.
There were 2 reported injuries to fire personnel on scene which required transport to the hospital. Both fire personnel were treated and released prior to the completion of the incident. No other injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation at this time.
The Prairie du Sac Fire Department would like to remind everyone of the importance of proper refuse disposal and recycling, especially, hazardous materials such as batteries, electronics, chemicals, and medical waste, using approved drop-off locations.
