Museum of Indigenous People

The Hopi have a word for it: "Sumi'nangwu" - all lives together. And, another word for it as well: "Nami'nangwu" - mutual concern for others.

As the COVID-19 pandemic brings extra health risks to the Native Americans of the Four Corners region, their friends here in Prescott and Sun City, AZ wanted to help.

Prescott Rotary Club of Prescott and the Rotary Club of Sun City have arranged for the donation of 2,000 disposable breath masks to the Hopi Tribe, via the Hopi Cultural Preservation Office (CPO)

MIP volunteers, staff and friends have also made 100 cloth breath masks to donate to the Hopi Tribe's Shungopavi and Second Mesa Villages.

The museum wants to thank everyone for their hard work and kind donations to this campaign. Thank you all!

Early-Literacy Giveaway Kicks Off Saturday

Saturday, September 14, 10 a.m. to noon — Families in the Prescott area can register their children for the Prescott Area Imagination Library (PAIL) and receive a free book in the mail every month from birth until the child’s fifth birthday! The Prescott Area Imagination Library is an affiliate of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, a nonprofit organization that coordinates the delivery of carefully selected, age-appropriate books to children throughout the U.S.

Years of research and dozens of studies point to the same thing: reading to children from the time they are born is critical to literacy development and academic success. Research also links the presence of books in a child’s home to early childhood literacy. Armed with this knowledge and united by the shared belief that our community should be actively engaged in promoting literacy, Sunup Rotary Club, Frontier Rotary Club, Prescott Rotary Club and the Friends of the Prescott Public Library teamed up to ensure that Prescott children have books in their homes.

The Prescott Area Imagination Library (PAIL) will celebrate with a Launch Party at Prescott Public Library on Saturday, September 14, 10 a.m. to noon. The event will include refreshments, activities and the opportunity to register for the program. Online registration is also available at: https://imaginationlibrary.com/usa/affiliate/AZPRESCOTT/ .

For more information, visit www.prescottlibrary.info/PAIL or call 928.777.1519.

Exciting news from Talek in Narok County Kenya. We helped fund this global grant with the Rotary Foundation and a number of our fellow Arizona clubs. https://www.facebook.com/RCOngataRongai/videos/2292089701037733/?t=0

Finally there is water for our friends in Mara Talek. This comes on the the same day we are celebrating The World Water Day(what a great coincidence). March is also Rotary's Water and Sanitation Month. We are truly humbled to be part of this journey.

Providing Clean Water

780 million people worldwide lack access to clean water. Rotary is trying to change that.

When people have access to clean water and sanitation, waterborne diseases decrease, children stay healthier and attend school more regularly, and mothers can spend less time carrying water and more time helping their families.

The team from Kenya was here on an informal friendship exchange. While in Kenya as part of the last Crutches 4 Africa trip, Elizabeth Mahoney and Kevin Pitts spent time with Naivasha Club Rotarians and invited them to visit Arizona. Originally, they were going to come to participate in the Mexico USA Friendship Conference. However, only one member, Charles Wachira, our friend from Ubuntu, could make it at that time. The others decided to come for Thanksgiving. The Naivasha Club has been a long-time partner in our water projects.

Edward, Ephantus, Gladys and Loice had a whirlwind visit for (1) Thanksgiving; (2-3) food distribution at South Mountain with Phoenix 100; (4-6) Las Vegas; (7-9) Grand Canyon; (10-11) chakra adjustments in Sedona; (12) with John Stewart at Sunup Rotary of Prescott meeting at 6:30 a.m.; (13) Phippen Museum; (14) with Ron Williams who will be one of the chaperones for next year’s Crutches 4 Africa; (15) multi-club farewell at Zipp’s ; and (16) manning the Prescott Rotary Club’s food tent at the Christmas parade. They also met with employees of two American Furniture Warehouse locations where mobility donations are stored prior to shipping and had a tour of the Arizona State Capitol with Chuck Fitzgerald
