*** Very Strong Winds Expected Wednesday December 17, 2025
Issued: Monday, December 15, 2025

KEY POINTS
A cold front will move through the area on Wednesday, producing very strong winds with gusts exceeding 50 mph in most locations

Valley rain and mountain snow will accompany the front, although precipitation amounts will generally be light except at elevations above 7,000 feet

The very strong winds combined with falling snow at higher elevations may severely reduce visibilities at times, leading to hazardous driving conditions
Maximum wind gusts are expected to reach speeds of 50-65 mph across most of eastern Idaho on Wednesday, potentially higher at mountain ridgetops.

Rain and snow will develop late Tuesday night into Wednesday with the passing cold front.

Snow levels will start out very high around 7,000-8,000 feet, but drop through the day behind the front. Accumulating snowfall will mainly remain at elevations above 6,000-7,000 feet.

Higher mountain passes may see periods of severely reduced visibilities at times in blowing snow, causing rapdily deteriorating driving conditions.

Those with backcountry interests should expect dangerous winter conditions as winds gusting over 60 mph combined with snowfall accumulations of 6-10 inches at elevations above 7,000 feet may produce periods of blizzard conditions.

Flood potential update

Above average temperatures Thursday preceding cold front passage
will maintain low and mid elevation snowmelt and runoff. Standing
water in typical low spots can be expected, and we'll also likely
see swelling in smaller creeks and tributaries that feed larger
streams and rivers. This may even push some streams and creeks above
bankful causing minor flooding and bank erosion due to the higher
flows.

Despite cold frontal passage late Thursday, overnight low
temperatures will remain above freezing for most areas Thursday
night, continuing the runoff. Temperatures Friday and Saturday dip
back down toward normals, and overnight lows will be back to near
freezing by Saturday morning. This cooldown, however, will be
accompanied by increasing rain chances which could add to the runoff
concerns.

Stay away from fast moving water, swollen river banks, and never
attempt to cross flowing water over roadways.

●Normal to above normal snowpack for this time of year

●The longer we maintain a good snowpack, the risk of rapid runoff and snowmelt
flooding increases

●Outlook for late March and early April favors above normal temperatures and leans
toward above normal precipitation

●Average to above average spring flood risk for the state as a whole

●Areas of SW Idaho and the Portneuf Basin where snowpack is the highest and soil
moisture is well above average have the greatest risk of snowmelt flooding

●Flood risk below major reservoir systems is near average

●Uncertainty in spring weather (temperature & precipitation)
