Now that school is back in session, here are some important school bus safety things drivers should look for, especially when approaching or following a school bus:

🚌 School Bus Safety — Drivers Should Watch For

🛑 Flashing red lights: STOP. Never pass a school bus when its red lights are flashing and the stop arm is extended.

🚸 Children crossing: Watch carefully for children crossing in front of or behind the bus. Never assume they will look for traffic.

⚠️ Children near the roadway: Slow down around bus stops, even if the bus is not actively loading or unloading.

👀 Hidden children: Children may suddenly run into the road from between parked cars, houses, or other vehicles.

↔️ Following distance: Leave plenty of space behind a school bus so you have time to react when it stops.

🚗 Passing: Never try to pass a stopped school bus with its warning lights activated.

🌧️ Poor visibility: Use extra caution in rain, fog, darkness, or snow when children and buses may be harder to see.

🏫 School zones: Slow down and expect frequent stops, pedestrians, crossing guards, and unexpected movements.

🔄 Multiple buses: Watch for additional buses stopping nearby and children moving between them.

📵 Stay focused: Put the phone down and eliminate distractions in school zones and around bus stops.
The most important rule: When you see a school bus stopped with its red lights flashing and stop arm extended, STOP and stay stopped until the bus signals that it is safe to proceed
